Interview with Author Amanda Cabot
A Borrowed Promise is the second book in the trilogy. Does it stand alone?
Absolutely, yes! (Was that emphatic enough?) I have two pet peeves in books. One is books where you need to read a series in the order the books were written for each story to make sense. The other is books that end with cliff hangers, where you have to read the next one to find out what happened. I promise my readers that I’ll never give them stories like that.
What can readers expect in book three?
Love, danger, and a happy ending for more than one couple. When I finished writing Tomorrow’s Garden, the final book in the Texas Dreams trilogy, readers kept asking for more stories about the characters they’d come to love. It took a while, but A Tender Hope answers that request, at least partially, because its heroine is Thea, the little girl who captured readers’ hearts in Paper Roses. It was such fun to discover what happened to Thea once she’d grown up.
What do you think most characterizes your writing?
I describe them as heartfelt stories of love and healing. What I try to do in each of my books is to create characters who, while they may life in a different century, face many of the same problems that confront twenty-first century people.
Are you a full-time or part-time writer? How does that affect your writing?
I’m currently a full-time writer, although for years (dare I say “decades”?) I wrote two books a year while working a day job that involved far too many sixty-hour work weeks. It’s wonderful to be retired from that job and to have the time to keep in touch with readers through social media.
What are some day jobs that you have held? Have any of them impacted your writing?
I was a director of information technology for a major international corporation. One of the good/bad things about that job was that I traveled extensively. The bad parts were airline food and all those nights away from home. The good part was that I had the opportunity to visit places like Paris, which plays a role in A Borrowed Dream. Hint: Catherine’s dream involves being in the City of Light.
If you were an animal in a zoo, what would you be? In four words or less, tell us why.
Elephant. Wonderful memory, deeply empathetic.
