NIGHTLINE SEGMENT!!!!

As if one trip wasn’t enough fun, I got invited back by ABC’s nightline to take part in a segment discussing the genre shift from YA to NA.  It was a blast! I got to meet the ever personable Colleen Hoover again! Along with Losing It author, Cora Carmack!  If you missed the air on TV, I posted the video below.  I have to admit I was a bit disappointed by the producers insistence that sex and sensationalism is what is selling NA books.  Everyone present for the taping insisted that the reason we enjoyed NA so much was for the love stories and the emotion that these books evoke.  It is so very obvious that the producers had never read any of Ms. Hoover’s books.  But, c’est la vie!

Colleen Hoover, she is such a nice, funny, REAL person!

  1. As a New Adult author I cringed at the comparison to a harlequin novel with younger characters. Harlequin is typically referred to as bottom of the barrel writing, with one theme–sex. I don’t think that sex is what is selling these books–I think it’s the fact that a large portion who were stuck either reading YA, which felt too young to them, or Adult, which felt too old, can now read something that fits them. Yes, there is sex is NA, but it’s an age where sex happens and is a normal part of life. NA doesn’t mean smut and meaningless sex–at least that’s not what my novels represent. I don’t think Colleen Hoover’s books represent that either. If only I could find the same overnight success! Thanks for sharing this, and congrats on meeting these amazing authors.

    • I agree with you cgiovanniwrites. New Adult does NOT equal smut. I was embarrassed after this aired because my family and co-workers were teasing me, saying that “NOW they know what I REALLY read.”
