We’re super excited to participate in this Blog Tour for City of Bones! Each day in August a participating blog will recap the next chapter of City of Bones. Some blogs will have some extra goodies about the book as well. Then, when all the recaps are complete, we’ll enjoy going to see the movie! Yay!
Here at Chapter Break we are doing a recap of Chapter 5. So sit back and read-a-long with the tour!
Chapter 5 Recap
In Chapter 5, Clary wakes up several days after being stung by a Demon and injected with its poison. She wakes up in the Institute and meets Isabelle, who gives her clean clothes to wear that shows us just how small Clary is, (and how tall and statuesque Isabelle is); Jace gives Clary a tour and they walk into the library to meet Hodge. This library is amazeballs, btw, just saying. Huge map of the world inlayed in the floor, books stacked to the ceiling, some stacked so high ladders set on casters are necessary to reach them. Alec is there, and he is quite rude about Clary’s presence. Clary calls Luke, but he tells her not to call him again and that her problems are not his problems. So, we definitely know something is wrong since Luke has been a father figure in Clary’s life. Clary tells Hodge what happened with the Demon and mentions that the Demon said something about Valentine. But, Valentine is supposed to be dead, and Hodge tells Clary the story of how Shadowhunters came about and we first learn about the Mortal Cup.
Here are some quotes I liked:
“A book lover, I see,” he said, smiling at Clary. “You didn’t tell me that, Jace.”
“How can you tell?” she asked the man behind the desk. “That I like books, I mean.”
“The look on your face when you walked in,” he said, standing up coming around from behind the desk. “Somehow I doubted you were that impressed by me.”
“I don’t want tea,” said Clary, with muffled force. “I want to find my mother. And then I want to find out who took her in the first place, and I want to kill them.”
“Unfortunately,” said Hodge, “we’re all out of bitter revenge at the moment, so it’s either tea or nothing.”
Meet Alec
“Shotgun!” announced Clary as Jace came back around the side of the van.
Alec grabbed for his bow, strapped across his back. “Where?”
“She means she wants the front seat,” said Jace, pushing wet hair out of his eyes.”
― Cassandra Clare, City of Bones
Alexander “Alec” Gideon Lightwood is a Shadowhunter and the eldest of the Lightwood children.
Alec is often soft spoken and serious in most situations. He tries his best to act wisely, and is shown not be as brave as Jace is; but cautious. He puts Jace and his sister’s safety before killing demons, frequently putting himself in danger to protect them. He shows himself to be extremely caring of the ones he loves, and is willing to do anything to save them, also he is said to be “easily guilted”. Between the whole group, Alec is the most clever.
Kevin Zegers will portray Alec Lightwood in the film adaptation of City of Bones.

Jessica from Day 3 of The TMI Blog Tour Stopping by! Love the quotes; I’ve always thought Alec was a little too uptight; but it makes him a great foil for Jace, and I love Alec anyway, regardless 🙂 New follower on BlogLovin!
I think Alec is a very interesting character, complex and rather atypical, original. Cassandra Clare has been brave and talented in her creating TMI characters. I love them all, though my best favourite are Jace and Simon.
My favourite moment in this chapter is when Clary finds Jace at the piano. I’ve always had a crush on boys/men able to play the piano!
“Jace was seated at the grand piano, his slender “hands moving rapidly over the keys. He was barefoot, dressed in jeans and a gray T-shirt, his tawny hair ruffled up around his head as if he’d just woken up. Watching the quick, sure movements of his hands across the keys, Clary remembered how it had felt to be lifted up by those hands, his arms holding her up and the stars hurtling down around her head like a rain of silver tinsel.”
This is another moment I’m looking forward to in the movie!
Thanks for sharing my giveaway!
