Seriously, I was so excited to see this movie! I won a T-shirt at the Houston Book Rave so I wore it, and I braided my hair, and wore my bookish earrings since I didn’t have Mockingjay earrings. Must fix this. Anyway check me out 🙂

I re-read Catching Fire before going to see the movie, because I wanted to do a true comparison and I wanted to remember all the feels. And boy were there feels! The book was as spectacular as I remember, and the movie was amazing as well. It was even better than the first movie, which I loved as well. I think the movie did a good job balancing out the victory tour and pre-games details with the 75th Hunger Games themselves. I felt like the book focused more on the earlier part and the games portion was shorter in comparison.  The emotions were real and true. I mean, the movie hadn’t been going for very long when we got to the Rue scene on the victory tour, and the tears were already going. That’s evidence of a scene done right. The games themselves were well done also with the scenery and the effects of the dangers. The mist scenes were extremely creepy and disturbing. My favorite scene was the interview the night before the games, when Katniss stands up and twirls in the wedding gown and it begins to burn away. That scene was amazing in the movie. Just spectacular. Chills I tell ya.

Now let’s talk about the differences, since there were plenty.  The That Was Not in the Book website has a good list of all the differences between the book and the movie. Some didn’t matter all that much, but there were a few instances where I felt something was missing. Sure, the movie is already 2.5 hours long, but a few more minutes couldn’t have hurt heh. I felt like we missed out on some Katniss and Peeta bonding time but I think the movie was trying to show that Katniss didn’t know how she felt about him. I also was disappointed that Plutarch did not show the mockingjay clock like in the book. “It starts at midnight” was an important quote to me in the book and I really missed that in the movie. However, the movie went out of its way to make the Gamemaster appear to be as evil as President Snow. There were also more gift parachutes sent to Katniss and Peeta that later we learn were used as clues for those who were privy to the plans, but this doesn’t happen in the movie. I think this might confuse people who haven’t read the book, since the explanations are quick.

Overall I’m extremely happy with the Catching Fire book to movie adaptation, and am looking forward to seeing how they turn Mockingjay into two movies.

What did you think of the movie? Sound off in the comments.

  1. How timely, I just watched this on Netflix last week and sadly, I was bored out of my skull! I couldn’t wait for it to be over. The movie moved quickly never staying on one person or event to long. As a result, I had problems connecting with any one character.

I do feel the movie did a better job of explaining WHY they decided that the winners from the previous Games, but beyond that I’m over movie adaptations of this series.

Aww that’s too bad that you didn’t like it. I’m dying to see the next one.. but.. well maybe if I can find a baby-friendly showing? Lol

  2. I just loved the shirt, Julie. And you look so happy. Well, reading good books and watching good movies would certainly make us one.

And I agree with you about Catching Fire. It’s so awesome and it really tried hard to stay faithful to the book. I know that this sounds pathetic but I was immediately crying my heart out during the start of the movie.

My only regret is that it doesn’t have a lot of gore which is opposed to the book. The game scene was very short for my liking. Hahaha. But overall, it really was a good movie. Finally, film makers are not that bad after all. I wish others would do the same. 😀

  3. I haven’t seen this yet and wasn’t in a huge hurry too since I thought the after The Hunger Games, I thought the rest of the books were just ok. However, I’ve heard such good things about the movie and it’s so much fun to see a book come to life that I think I’ll probably end up seeing this eventually anyway. I’m glad you had a good time seeing it 🙂

  4. I agree that this was a good version of the book. I really liked how Katniss made it much more clear (as opposed to the first movie) that she was only with Peeta because of the Games. I was so glad that I reread the book the week before I saw the movie, because it allowed me to see the similarities/differences.

And I’m jealous of your shirt!!!!
