Feature for March 21, 2014 – Question: How have your reading habits changed in the past few years? Did you get interested in a new genre? Do you read more? Less? Why do you think your habits changed, if they did.
Julie:
I used to read a lot of thriller/mystery genre books. In fact, when the local budget bookstore had their semi-annual sale (I’m looking at you KBB) I stocked up on James Pattersons and John Grishams. Then, I got burnt out on those. I don’t read that genre anymore. Now I read a lot of YA/NA and paranormal. I’ve always read paranormal though. It is kind of interesting to see how tastes change over time. Now that I’m a bit older, I’m enjoying YA more than I used to. Go figure on that one.
Rose:
Hmmm, in the past few years, I have been reading a lot than I used to. I also prefer to listen to audio books now. I am extremely lucky in that I can listen at work. I would never be able to read nearly as much as what I do if it weren’t for audio books. And whispersync? GENUIS! I do not know that I have really read any different genre. I have always loved YA and NA, even before it was ever called NA. I will say that having finally gotten a smartphone and kindle has had a major effect on my reading. Now I can carry my library with me everywhere I go right in my pocket. I love that I can get new titles right to my phone or kindle the minute they come out. One habit that has changed is that I am less likely to read a book based on its pretty cover. That is one of my weaknesses. If it has a pretty cover, I tend to want to read it and we all know that never leads anywhere good.

Electronic reading is really awesome, but nothing beats physical books for me 🙂

I read a lot of depressing books. About twice a year I take a break and read something like Sookie Stackhouse as a palate cleanser. Sometimes the change in refreshing!

I agree, Terri. Sometimes you gotta switch it up. I tend to like really emotionally charge character driven novels, but sometimes I will throw a paranormal in there for a change.
I love both your answers I love YA as well. I would love to start listening to audio books I really need to try one! Great post!

Ashley, I recommend audible.com They have the newest titles and if you don’t like a book, you can return it, no questions asked. They usually run an introductory price plan as well. If you are looking for a good narrator, I will listen to Kate Rudd read anything. She is amazing.
I enjoy YA much more now than I did when I was younger! New bloglovin follower.

I also read lots of NA now and I have to say that I probably read more ebooks than phsyical books just because of convenience, although physical books have a special place in my heart 🙂

Zareena, I like physical books too (mainly because of the pretty covers). I think that NA lends itself to ebook because so many of the authors of NA are indie published only.

Hopping through. I got into John Grisham in middle school. Then in 9th grade I hated the ending of one of the books and never read another one.

Alison, isn’t it crazy how just ONE book can put you off an entire genre???
Julie – I’m glad you branched out. (I did too) There are just so many great books out there – it’s hard to stick to just one genre…although I did for a long time. 🙂
Rose – electronic reading definitely makes a difference, doesn’t it? I love the portability. I haven’t begun listening to books – I just don’t know if I can do it. But I’m thrilled for you that you can listen to books at work. That’s great!
Happy Friday, ladies!!
