Here is the beginning of a book I just started reading:
I AM A COWARD.
I wanted to be heroic and I pretended I was. I have always been good at pretending. I spent the first twelve years of my life playing at the Battle of Stirling Bridge with my five big brothers- and even though I am a girl, they let me be William Wallace, who is supposed to be one of our ancestors, because I did the most rousting battle speeches. God, I tried hard last week. My God, I tried. But now I know I am a coward. After the ridiculous deal I made with SS-Hauptsturmfuhrer von Linden, I know I am a coward. And I’m going to give you anything you ask, everything I can remember. Absolutely Every Last Detail.
Code Name Verity by: Elizabeth Wein
The beginning of this book had me immediately intrigued. The next paragraph was even better, and the next, and the next. This book is beautifully and expertly written. I listened to the audiobook, but I am going to recommend my YA For Adults Book Club read this book. It was amazing and funny and refreshing and haunting.
This is such a great idea. And that is quite an opening. I can see why you were immediately hooked, since now I’m interested as well. 🙂 Thanks for sharing, Rose!

The audiobook for Code Name Verity is amazing. It felt like Queenie and Maddie were in the car with me tell me their life story. I laughed. I cried. I screamed in frustration. And now I can’t stop talking about this book. I need someone else to read it so I can dish.

We are going to read this book this year in my YA For Adults Book Club… sometimes after the spring. I loved the audio
I was also pretty impressed with the way this book started off, that first line alone definitely draws you in. While I couldn’t totally get into the book, the writing in this one was really nice.

This sounds like an engrossing book with a good plot. I like the way the character introduces herself in the opening. Interesting background info.

I’ve been wanting to read this one for awhile. Love the excerpt for it! Hope you’re enjoying it! I’ve heard it’s a powerful read.

Katherine, I actually just finished it. And it was powerful! You should read it soon!!!
I love when a book captures me from the first sentence and only gets better. Happy reading.

Thanks Sherry! I sometimes find myself reading the first page of a book at the book store or library before I decide to take the book home with me. If the first page draws me in, I read the book. I will do this , too whenever I cannot decide which book to read. I will grab two or three books from my TBR pile and read the first page or first paragraph. Which ever one I find myself more drawn to is the book I decide to read at that time.
That’s a great opening paragraph! I just started reading A Taste of Winter by Laila Blake last night, and mine is: “The cottage loomed in the distance like a crouching animal, like a tortoise—its shell covered in moss and dirt and snow.”
