Halloween has just passed so lets discuss paranormal creatures. What creatures do you like to read about? Like the least? Got a good paranormal creatures rec???
Julie:
It is no secret that I love the paranormal genre. I really enjoy reading about all kinds of creatures and I’m even in a book club called Creatures of the Nyght, where we read about, you guessed it, creatures. Of course there are the mainstream creatures that we’re all familiar with – Vampires and Werewolves. Those have to be the most common. I admit I do like a good Vampy book, but there are just so many out there that it gets hard to tell which one will be good and which one will just be another book with vampires. I kind of feel the same about Weres. A lot of the general story lines are similar, with pack politics and alpha males acting all possessive and stuff. So I prefer the lesser used creatures. Maybe that’s why I love Rachel Vincent’s Soul Screamers series so much – this is the YA series with banshees and other creatures that are awesome. Ooh and it also has demons. I also am a fan of the same author’s adult Shifters series that has to do with Cat shifters. Yes, cats! Yes there’s still a lot of pack politics but it has some strong female character awesomeness going on. I also like mermaids and haven’t read too many of those lately. I also like a good old fashioned witchy creature. I guess witches aren’t so much creatures as they are magical humans, but still. They are cool.
Rose:
Okay so no big surprise here, but I am not really into paranormal that much. I mean I like some vampire books, but I have never really gotten into the who shape-shifter, paranormal genre thing. I really really do not enjoy reading books about witches. I just get bored. I think it has to do with magic. Magic is too convenient. Now if the magic in the book has RULES that I can learn and understand then that works for me because the limitation of the magic is where the story/conflict lies. Mostly paranormal books leave me with this suprise at the end making me feel duped because there was simply some easy-peasy loop hole that allowed the protagonist to save the day. Blah! Boo! Boring! Open to suggestions on books that could change my mind. My favorite paranormal book? I suppose I would have to go with Twilight, although my favorite vampire book would probably be Bram Stoker’s Dracula!

I’m with Rose on this one! I love some magical creatures with rules, but generally I don’t enjoy most paranormal books. There are some exceptions, obviously. I love Discworld, but it isn’t meant to be serious. So glad you linked up to Quote Me Thursday again!
Hmm I haven’t heard of Discworld. Gotta look that up.
Vampires, but not sparkly ones. 🙂 I fell hard for Bill Compton in the Sookie Stackhouse series and have been ruined for life. My vamps must be gentlemen with a nice Southern accent.

I do like a southern gentleman vamp 🙂
Oh, I love all kinds of Paranormal creatures to be honest (Paranormal is one of my favorite genres after Fantasy). I think I would prefer something that’s not the usual that you find commonly in novels. I believe Elves need a bit of shine – the ones I’ve come across has a romance that overshadows the plot. >_<
Ooh some Elf stories that have a good plot line would be fun to read.
No surprise here either – I LOVE paranormal! I like to go off the mainstream a bit too, though. I eat up books about the Fae and demons are a favorite. I also really enjoyed soul screamers, though I still need to read the shifter series. And Dracula is a classic – can’t fault you for preferring it!

Demon stories are fun 🙂
Great post, ladies. I became a huge fan of paranormal after reading Twilight. 🙂 I’m with you, Julie, in that there are so many vampire and werewolf books out there, it’s hard to find something fresh. I love, love, love Rachel Vincent though!! Have you read her Bound series? You should check it out, if you haven’t. I don’t know how big either of you are about reading indies, but Nicky Charles has a werewolf series that is really good and they’re all *free*. Lizzy Ford also offers some good paranormals. Oh, Jennifer Turner has an interesting take on vampires, as does Tessa Dawn.
Rose, have you tried The Hollows by Kim Harrison? I think it’s different in that there are paranormals (witches, vamps, weres, demons, & elves) and they interact among human society. There’s an interesting reason they’re all out in the open. And besides the action and growth of the MC over the course of the series, the series is also a sort of social commentary.

I’ve read the first Bound book but I own them all. Gotta get on those too heh. I’m going to have to check out the Nicky Charles books. I loved the first Hollows book but couldn’t get into the second heh. I did buy the whole series so I’ll eventually get through those too.
