Power Through Creative Block with Brainstormer

From a Contributor.

Whether you’re an experienced writer or just starting out, writer’s block is something that affects us all. Those coming right out of National Novel Writing Month (NaNoWriMo) probably feel this more than most other people, squeezed dry of all creative juices after a long month of trying to churn out a novel. What’s a writer to do when they have no idea what to write about? Believe it or not, the answer might be found by simply spinning a wheel.

And no, we’re not talking about heading down to the local casino (although the excursion could give you the boost of inspiration you need). Nope, we’re talking about Brainstormer, an innovative app that combines different examples of Plot/Conflict, Style/Setting, and Subject/Location. All the user has to do to be able to play is download the app, select between Wheel Mode or Slot Mode, and shake the device or roll the dice, and watch as their new story idea comes to life!

The Brainstormer’s word lists are also fully editable, so you can rest assured that you’ll only be given ideas that you’re comfortable writing about. This also means that you can continue to challenge yourself, replacing “way too easy” prompts with tougher ideas that you’ve never written about before. Once you’ve spun the wheels and found the perfect combination, you can then lock the wheels to make sure you don’t lose it, and even share it via email, Facebook, or Twitter – the perfect feature for sending out Five Minute Fiction challenges to Twitter followers!

The best part about the Brainstormer is that it works on just about any Apple device, and doesn’t even need an internet connection. (Unfortunately, it is not yet available for Android devices.) A blog post by AlchemyBet, the owners of mobile gaming website Pocket Fruity, has revealed that people have used their phones in various situations: in church, while driving, in a meeting or in class, at a sporting event, and even in the gym. You’ve probably thought about writing, or come up with a new story idea in one of those situations too, and now, with the Brainstormer, you can be well on your way to constructing a story, right with a few spins of the wheel.

The app is available on the iTunes App Store for $1.99. As a bonus, it also has a Character Creator and a World Builder, and even a fantasy animal generator.
