Julie’s Review – Book: Movie:
The Fifty Shades books were so-so, addicting, but not all that great. The movie on the other hand was very well done. All the things that were special in the book were done very well on the screen. I was expecting more of a porno but all the sexual scenes were tastefully done and the entire movie was visually stunning. I was happy the “inner Goddess” stuff was left out of the movie. The actors both did a great job becoming Christian and Ana. Overall, this one is a movie >> book *gasp*.
For me, I liked the Fifty Shades of Grey movie more than the book.
Oh wait, you probably want more than that statement.
I wasn’t all that overly fond of the book. I still haven’t read the third book after I saw a not very surprising spoiler on-line. I’m not even going to bother discussing the poor writing. Ana in the book really irritated me, especially the whole inner Goddess device. And every time Ana thought or said “Oh My” this is all I thought:
I pretty much imagined Ana’s inner voice as George Takei. Which was very distracting.
I could take or leave Christian. The whole I’m damaged and you are not going to change me isn’t very interesting. Though, I am impressed by the number of non-readers out there that have read Fifty Shades. It is a serious cultural phenomenon. And I might be interested in Grey, but really only because Zachary Webber is reading the audio. (But it’s 32 HOURS long. So maybe not.)
As for the movie, I thought that the chemistry between the two actors was kind of lacking. This photo kind of sums up their chemistry.
I did appreciate how the movie was more compact, less inner Goddess-y. Though, I do wish the dinner with the family scene would have been more like the book. And I can see how the producers saves a ton of money on Dakota’s wardrobe, what with her not actually wearing clothes most of the movie. The over-all best part of the movie is the soundtrack. I think the songs that we picked enhanced everything about the movie.
So yes, see the movie if you are interested (and haven’t already). And yes, I’m sure I’ll be seeing the other movies when they are released. If only to find out what happens in the end without having to read the last book.
What did you think of the movie? Sound off in the comments.
I really don’t like writing bad reviews. I admire people who have the courage to put pen to paper and expose themselves to the whole world, especially those writing erotica. Having just finished this book, however, I feel compelled to write a review
I think as long as your review is about the book, and not a personal attack on the author, a negative review should not be a problem. Not all books are for everyone.
I actually liked the book – even if it does have lot of flaws. The inner goddess thing wasn’t a favorite element, so I was glad to see that go in the movie. I thought they did a good job with the emails & texts, which were one of my favorite parts of the book. I didn’t love the chemistry though. As much as I thought Dakota Johnson was perfect for her, I felt Jamie Dornan was off. I didn’t go in thinking that, I was excited for him. But he didn’t seem to feel comfortable as Christian to me. *shrugs* so I liked some things about both disliked some. Probably would rate them the same, 4 stars I think.

I loved the emails and texts too, those definitely made the book for me 🙂
Although I have no intentions of watching the movie (unless there’s a gun on my head), I think Dakota is a great choice for Anastasia. That said, are you ladies going to read Grey?

I’m going to need someone else to read Grey, first, Braine. And then tell me how it bad it is!
I only read the first book, which was the worst I ever held in my hands. I didn’t go to see the movie, because I have serious issues with romanticising abuse in a relationship. I don’t get the craze surrounding this phenomenon. Sorry, I just can’t stand the damn thing 🙂

We totally understand, Ramona. And thanks for the comment!
I haven’t read the book, or seen the movie, but it is interesting that the movie is better for the both of you. I almost always feel like I have to read the book first, but there are exceptions. I may go ahead and watch the movie and read the book if the mood hits.

Yeah, Suzi – I’d skip the book. You aren’t missing anything
I thought the actor for CG looked like a beady eyed gerbil. I couldn’t get that thought out of my head the entire movie. hahaha I liked it, but I don’t think the movie was amazing or anything.
HAHAHAHA I totally see that now
I thought the movie was done well. I was surprised, actually. I liked the book, even if it’s not without its issues. And I guess I’d rate them pretty closely. I think my favorite scene from the movie was discussing limits at the board room table. 🙂
