Many books feature Artists as an important character. Let’s chat about those.
Julie:
Goodreads has some great lists with artists in books:
Artistic talent comes in many forms – whether visual, performing, or something else.
I can think of quite a few books featuring musicians: If I Stay and Where She Went and of course Maybe Someday even comes with a new dimension of music with its own soundtrack.
Then there are books with painting characters, such as Clary and her Mom in the Mortal Instruments series, Peeta from The Hunger Games and let’s not forget Adrian from the Vampire Academy and Bloodlines series.
Who are some of your favorite artist characters?
Lynn:
There do seem to be a lot of contemporary NA romance with artists as the main characters. Actors, painters, tattoo artists, musicians. And really, a lot of them have blended together and I can’t remember which author wrote which books.
One book that does stand out in my memory, though, is Flirting with Forever by Gwyn Cready. This book is about an art historian who travels back in time to meet Peter Lely, a Dutch master from the 1600’s. I didn’t know much about Lely’s work before reading this, but became fascinated after. I have no idea as to the accuracy of Ms. Cready’s characterization of Lely. But I fell for him all the same. There are other historical fiction about artists like Manet, Monet, van Gogh, Vermeer, Degas. And now I have even more books on my TBR list.

I love Jandy Nelson’s books with artists. Both main characters in I’ll Give You The Sun are painters. The MC in The Sky Is Everywhere is a writer. Her books are a work of art for sure.

Guess I have to add both to my list 🙂
Ooh, and I’ll Give You The Sun was full of art – and so amazingly well described! Loved it 🙂

We’ve definitely been seeing that recommended a bunch. Maybe we should do a read-athon-along-amagig?
I just finished listening to Seraphina (read it before) and reading Shadow Scale. Seraphina is a musician and music plays a huge part in her life. I played piano for 8 years and feel a kinship with other musicians.
One of my favorite artists it Beethoven. While it is not a book, one of my favorite movies is Immortal Beloved. Total fictional account of Beethoven’s life, but the music plays a huge part in telling the story and Gary Oldman is divine!

I liked Seraphina, too, Terri. Music does play a huge part in books. And movies!
