Have you checked out our various Features pages lately? Julie and I are all about Features posts. (Who doesn’t need an occasional break from reviews?) In this new feature post, we will be discussing What Books Taught Us. And no, we don’t mean cooking, crafting, or organizing. We are talking about serious, useful skills. Like how to survive the impending apocalypse. We want to make sure all of our readers are prepared!

How to Survive the Apocalypse, According to Books

Food and water are vital to your survival:

Make sure you horde all the food you can find. If Poison Princess taught me anything, it was that stock-piling canned food is the way to go. Keep it all at your home base. Carry it around in your bug-out bag. Sure, it helps to have magic powers to heal the scorched earth. But that is a bit more difficult to come by.

Horde water while you are at it. I learned this from The 5th Wave. Cassie mentions that all the stores are out of water. Maybe pack one of those fancy water filters in your bug-out bag.

(These both also apply to hurricane season if you live in hurricane prone regions, like Julie and I.)

Don’t eat or drink ANYTHING that vampires or fae have given you. Seriously. Never. We all know what happens to Simon in The Mortal Instruments.  Just don’t. Even Meghan Chase has a plan to pack a bag before going back into the never never in the Iron Fey series.

In fact, learn to live off the land and forage for food:

Lucy from Ashes, Ashes talks about (and attempts to) make turtle soup when regular food runs out.

Of course, we know how talented Katniss is at hunting and gathering food for survival.

Luck is vital to your survival:

Be in the right place at the right time. Shy from The Living taught me how to survive an outbreak of a deadly disease – be on a cruise ship. Ok, sure, there was a tsunami while he was on the ship, but that’s what life rafts are for.

Katniss also taught us about luck in The Hunger Games. She had her name in the lottery a bunch of times. But it was Prim, with one entry, who was chosen. The odds were not in Prim’s favor.

Bad boys with a heart of gold are vital to your survival:

Every dystopia book written. Well, at least the ones I’ve read. Katniss has Peeta. Tris has Four. Evie has Jack. Cassie has Evan Walker. Mac has Jericho. It’s pretty obvious to me that no single female is going to survive the apocalypse without a man at her side.

It really is about who you know that helps ensure you get through this thing.

Meghan Chase learns to make powerful allies and trade favors with the fae to get safe passage through scary lands.

You also have to be very careful about who you trust, because people will betray you when times are rough. Alex experiences this in Ashes quite a bit while trying to find a safe place.

And don’t forget your towel

Any skills you can think of which would help survive the apocalypse? Or, any topics you want to see us explore in this feature?

Is there a book that taught you the tip to stockpile gas? Totally agree with that though. I mean, it will break down eventually but for a while it will be super helpful to have a lot of.
