What Richelle Mead’s Books Taught Us

what books taught us
I needed a post for this week and realized we haven’t had a book lesson lately! Julie and I are all about Features posts. (Who doesn’t need an occasional break from reviews?) In this feature post, we will be discussing What Books Taught Us. And no, we don’t mean cooking, crafting, or organizing. We are talking about serious, useful skills. We want to make sure all of our readers are prepared!

A quick search of our blog will tell you Julie and I are all about Richelle Mead’s books. She’s definitely a fav around here! Here are some crucial skills that we’ve learned from her books:

Fight for what you feel is right, even when your family and everyone is against it

Ah, Sydney. Her alchemist heritage has her at odds with what she wants. Mainly Adrian! Well, Adrian and keeping the general human population from knowing that vampires exist. Luckily, Sydney knows what is worth fighting for.

“No matter how long or how difficult, we will undo whatever that Moroi boy has done to you.”

I managed a wavering smile, tasting blood in my mouth. “You sure about that, Dad? Because he’s done everything to me.”

“You’re not as much of a lost cause as she was. I mean, with her, I had to overcome her deep, epic love with a Russian warlord. You and I just have to overcome hundreds of years’ worth of deeply ingrained prejudice and taboo between our two races. Easy.”

Loyalty is a very important skill

Rose is all about loyalty. To Lissa. To being a dhampir, fighting Strigoi. Maybe not to school. But definitely to Dimitri. I think it’s her loyalty to Lissa which is Rose’s main motivation. Especially while being shadow-kissed. Why else would she break a crazy bad guy out of jail?

“Only a true best friend can protect you from your immortal enemies.”

“Lissa and I had been friends ever since kindergarten, when our teacher had paired us up together for writing lessons. Forcing five-year-olds to spell Vasilisa Dragomir and Rosemarie Hathaway was beyond cruel, and we’d—or rather, I’d—responded appropriately. I’d chucked my book at out teacher and called her a fascist bastard. I hadn’t known what those words meant, but I’d known how to hit a moving target.
Lissa and I had been inseparable ever since.”

Even when your BF turns all evil Strigoi, he still loves you!

Ok – maybe that’s not a good real life lesson. But fiction lesson, for sure! For me, these scenes are all the feels. Even evil, Dimitri is still super sexy! Unlike Rose, I don’t know that I would have been able to resist his charms.

“I set off, off to kill the man I love.”

“You forgot another lesson: Never turn your back until you know your enemy
is dead. Looks like we’ll have to go over the lesson again the next time
I see you—which will be soon.
Love, D.”

“I’d said it before and meant it: Alive or undead, the love of my life was a badass.”

Humor is definitely the way to a girl’s heart.

Well, my heart at least. If you ask me, Dimitri wins the book boyfriend battle. But honestly, not by much. Adrian is absolutely adorable. And irresistible. And hilarious. It’s not wonder Sydney falls for him.

” ‘She Blinded Me With Science.’ ”

“What?” Sydney asked.

“That could be our song.”

“Well,” she said. “I guess that’s better than ‘Tainted Love’.”

“Do you want me to call you Celery Stick instead of Cupcake or Honey-Pie? It just doesn’t inspire the same warm and fuzzy feelings.”

And now, I leave you with a gif from the movie (which admittedly is so bad I’ve watched it a ton of times!). I’m currently resisting the need to re-read all these books!

  1. I’ve been wanting to re-read this series for AGES. I fell in love with it from the start, and it’s been a favorite of mine ever since. I haven’t had the heart to read the spinoff series yet (I was team Adrian ALL DAY, though I do love me some Dimitri…) Gah, that was one love triangle I didn’t mind and never wanted to end.

I actually didn’t mind the movie and it’s great way for a quick fix. The books are crazy better, though.

I found your blog on Bloggers Commenting Back, and now I’m following you via Bloglovin’! <3

Thanks, Lindsi! And I think Julie and I both agree with you completely! Especially about the love triangle!
