Here at Chapter Break, we don’t always write a full review of every book we read. Well, now we decided to do these monthly wrap-up posts with roundups of our reviews this month and mini-reviews to fill in the gaps. Enjoy!
Dragon Shadow: I received a complimentary copy of this book. But didn’t feel the need to do a full-size review. It’s a fun little book, just the right length to be enjoyable as a romp through urban-fantasy land. The characters are interesting, but not very deep. It didn’t have time to really develop the characters yet or to really make me care about them. There’s just enough to keep my interest though. The main character is a firey (pun intended) chicka who is on a mission to take the baddies down a notch, and maybe get her fire back one day. She gets into some dangerously fun situations and works with the fae to solve the main problem and rescue her kidnapped sister. The audio narration was great, good voices and pacing. The book is set up for an interesting series with the big bad spanning multiple books. This one set up a new partnership in our main character’s life Final verdict: Fun urban fantasy, but not too deep.
Micro: Honey I Shrunk the Kids, if the kids were super-smart grad students who were shrunk by an evil corporation. And it turns out I don’t really care. This was lacking that something spark that I always associate with Michael Crichton books. I really struggled to finish this book. But I need those Bingo Squares!
Caraval : Meh. Parts of this are good, like when Scarlet finds her backbone. Both the rest, pretty bland. Same narrator as Heartless and that’s distracting the heck out of me.
Anti-Romance: This should get -12 Stars for ending in the middle of a paragraph\scene. I LOATHE that. I get cliff-hangers. But could we at least end the thought before ending? Bonus positive stars, though, for having a female character be the one out there playing the field, instead of the male character. Plus, when I bought it, I apparently also received a free e-book with the purchase. That was a nice surprise!
Forever Ours: My free book from the Anti-Romance purchase. Another book that ending in the middle of a paragraph\scene. I’m done with this author!
Books we reviewed this month:
- [10 Apr] A Witch's Concern by N.E. Conneely ★★★★
- [11 Apr] Covey Jencks by Shelton Williams ★★★★½
- [13 Apr] Ready Player One by Ernest Cline ★★★★½
- [18 Apr] Slumber by J.L. Weil ★★★★
I keep putting off Caraval as I’ve seen a lot of “meh” reviews! I think the sequel is out in May so I might try and finally catch up.
Vee @ Under The Mountain
well, Vee, the epilogue was enough to have me interested in the sequel. So maybe just read that part! HAH!
