Here at Chapter Break, we don’t always write a full review of every book we read. Well, now we decided to do these monthly wrap-up posts with roundups of our reviews this month and mini-reviews to fill in the gaps. Enjoy!
This book was provided complimentary. I decided to be lazy AF and review in the mini.
Barrel of Whiskey (Whiskey Witches – Origins Book 3) So I reviewed the first two books in the Whiskey Witches series, and am now having the chance to listen and review the third. This is my “I liked it but” review. It started out strong and exciting, with a best friend’s murder, and a special baby to be protected and hidden from those who would do harm. Then there’s the but. About half of the book was dealing with Paige’s wallowing in self-pity and lots and lots of family drama. It was getting to be too much. But finally, in the last couple of hours of the book, it got exciting and intense. Kidnapping, family attacks, death threats, the ultimate test, and learning more about their magic. It ends with a “we’re coming for you” attitude but I’m not super convinced we should forgive or team up with those that were behind it all. So I kind of have mixed feelings but it sounds like the fourth book is going to be epic. I’m enjoying the narrator like I had in the previous book. Overall 3.5 stars.
Obsidio: Guys. GUYS. I just cannot with this book. SO. GOOD. An amazing finish to a stupendous series. 12/5 would recommend. It’s not just a “space opera”. It’s so much more. And this one? So much emotion and heartache and love and all the stuff in between. Great on audio. Great on ebook. You could not go wrong with this series.
Lord John and the Private Matter: Not bad. Not great. a solid B. I do love the set up for #2 in the series (which I read first. I know. Don’t @ me.) I am interested to see how this series circles back around to Outlander when Lord John meets up with Jamie and Clare. Audio narration was ok. I kind of wish it were David Berry doing the narration, though. <wink> <wink>
Only Human: This series is so heartbreakingly well-written. And Only Human does not disappoint. This time around, it’s about how to maintain your humanity in the face of adversity, when that adversity is living on a whole other planet. And bonus points for Mr. Neuvel and any readers who actually get the Shaka When the Walls Fell reference WITHOUT using Google!
Books we reviewed this month:
If you are worried about the Outlander books, Darlene, you can stop with #4. They get REALLY long and tedious after that one!
I need to start The Illuminae Files and Themsis Files series! Glad to see how much you enjoyed them both.
You’ve reminded me that I really need to get back to the Outlander series. I listened to and loved the first, but big books scare me so I have never continued on! For me, they’re tough to tackle.

Big books are intimidating for sure
