Let’s chat about some books we enjoy reading around Halloween time!
Julie:
I can’t say I have a specific book or series I read around Halloween time, because, let’s face it I don’t have time to re-read. Plus, I enjoy the paranormal genre any time of year! And paranormal creatures that are unique are my favorite!
It has been a while since I talked about my favorite types of paranormal so here I’ll share some new thoughts.
You can and should always consider some classics for your Halloween TBR. These are timeless and always great monster books for a monster holiday!
But there have also been some great creepy creature novels of our time too. And not just the paranormal romance where the creatures are sexy lover types.
There’s Fury’s Kiss, in which an ancient Fury embodies a young woman to take revenge on the evil doers. Or how about a pretty kick-ass Druid (from the Iron Druid Chronicles) who delivers hilarious one-liners while delivering pain to the enemies of his friends and his home. And then there’s a beloved favorite, the Banshee (Bean Sidhe) who just wants to get through high school without dying, aka the Soul Screamers series.
Lynn:
I am not a fan of scary books! Not. At. All. So instead, I’m going to recommend some scary-adjacent books!
You can’t go wrong with Neil Gaiman’s books written for children if you are looking for a wee fright. I loved Coraline (and those creepy button eyes) and The Graveyard Book. I found this pair of books quite entertaining. And only a bit spine-tingling. The audiobooks read by Mr. Gaiman himself made the books all that much more entertaining.
In the books featuring paranormal characters category, we have Carry On, The All Souls Trilogy, and the Hex Hall series. I adored the chapters featuring Simon and Baz while reading Fangirl. I was equally enamored while reading this standalone focusing on their last year at school. As for the All Souls Trilogy, there are witches, vampires, AND daemons. What could be more Halloween-y! Plus, Matthew Clairmont is the best. Hex Hall is super snarky and not all trope-y. Which is a great change of pace for YA books.

I wouldn’t have thought of Carry On, but it does seem like it would work well for this category!
