We’re starting a new feature here on Chapter Break called Chat About Covers. ‘Cause you know we all judge books by covers, whether we admit it or not. We judge the style, the color and font choices, and just the overall look. That might not keep us from reading the book, but we do still judge.
This is kind of an elegant and simple cover at the same time. I love the wallpaper background and the castle. I like how the girl is kind of there but kind of mysterious. She’s kind of behind the castle and kind of not. I love her feather hat, perfect for the style and title.
I don’t like how the text is over the girl and her dress and doesn’t stand out on its own very well. It might have been better above, like the author’s name. The “a novel of” section is like an afterthought, and not easy to read.
I don’t know what the book is about, so I’m not sure I’m intrigued to pick it up. I don’t read much histfic. And I assume that’s what this is.
I think this cover is gorgeous. I love the colors in the background wallpaper and how the sash around her waist is the same color. The hat and dress draw me in right away. And I agree with Julie on the castle. The dress kind of looks like it’s a part of the castle.
I also agree with the “a novel of” section. The white font does not stand out against the background and the white dress.
I am a reader of historical fiction and this one interests me enough to read the description. It’s one of those real life dramatization. Real characters with some fiction thrown in. At least I think it’s fiction.
What are your thoughts on this cover?
Sorry…hit send too quickly. The cover is pretty – not a fan of the orangey color of the background though. Something about it off putting to me. I do like the layout, just not the color.
I, too, look at a cover first. If something doesn’t catch my eye, I am less likely to buy. Only exception would an author I particularly like (Sandra Brown, Linda Howard) where I tend to buy on name alone.
Julie and I both agree with you, Dana. Any favorite author is exempt from judging books by their covers!
