Here at Chapter Break, we don’t always write a full review of every book we read. Well, now we decided to do these monthly wrap-up posts with roundups of our reviews this month and mini-reviews to fill in the gaps. Enjoy!
The only books I’m finishing this month are being reviewed separately. So nothing mini for me to report.
Stephen Fry’s Victorian Secrets: This is an audible original and a free download! Yay free! It is such a great book if you are into offbeat history. The recurring theme is certainly the historian as a detective. I learned that Victorians are just like us. They love secrets, drama, scandal, and sex. Usually all at the same time! I also learned the originals of terms like stool sample and why a barber’s pole is red and white stripes. This listens like a podcast, interspersing interviews, diary readings, and narration throughout. I’m always up for narration by Mr. Fry, and this book does not disappoint. Totally worth checking out!
Muse of Nightmares: I was thinking about wringing a full review for this. But in the end, it would have just been a bunch of lovely quotes written by Ms. Taylor. That seemed kind of silly. Suffice it to say, totally loved this book. Gorgeous, visual, language. Even in the chapter headings (like It Would Be Stranger If There Weren’t Dragons.) Fulfilling ending. Let me just leave you with this one quote:
and it felt, as it ever had, like calligraphy, if calligraphy were written in honey.
Read these books, people!
Children of Blood and Bone: I liked it. But didn’t love it. The audio narration was well done, though I sometimes had difficulty in telling the voices of Zelie and Amari apart. The world building is very impressive. I struggled with the journey (physical and emotional) of the story. I did love the action scenes! And I especially loved Roen. Flirty bad boys are my thing, what can I say,
