A Conversation with Jackson Guthrie from
A TENDER HOPE
by Amanda Cabot
If you’re looking for some insights into Jackson Guthrie, the hero of A Tender Hope, you might enjoy this conversation that I overheard between him and Silver, the owner of Cimarron Creek’s saloon.
Silver: So, what’ll it be, Red? The usual?
Jackson: You know you’re the only one who calls me that. Even my parents didn’t call me Red.
Silver: Probably ’cuz they had red hair too. Now, a sarsaparilla for the Ranger who ain’t wearin’ a star?
Jackson: Make it two. I’m feeling thirsty today. And you know, Rangers don’t always feel the need to advertise who we are. I reckon that’s why the state gives us identity papers, but no badges.
Silver: Badge or no badge, there’s no mistakin’ the fact that you’re a lawman. Folks are mighty curious about why you’re in Cimarron Creek. I figger it’s to do more than take care of that little tyke you found outside town or romance the pretty new midwife.
Jackson: Wait a minute. Who said anything about romancing? I’m not looking for a wife, and Thea’s not looking for a husband.
Silver: You can say what you want, but I got eyes. I know what it means when a man gives a lady that special look.
Jackson: You’ve got that wrong, Silver, but you’re right about one thing. I do have a reason for being here. There aren’t many in town who know it, but the sheriff tells me you’re good at keeping secrets, and I could use an extra pair of eyes.
Silver: Who’re you lookin’ for?
Jackson: Folks call them the Gang of Four, although there are only three now. Two men and a woman. The woman’s almost as tall as the men, and she wears men’s clothes, so –
Silver: You don’t need to worry about me, Red. I can tell the difference between a man and a woman, no matter what she’s wearin’. Now, what do you want me to do ifn I spot ’em?
Jackson: Get word to the sheriff. He’ll find me.
Silver: I can do that, ifn you promise me one thing.
Jackson: What’s that?
Silver: Invite me to your weddin’.
Jackson: But I told you I wasn’t a marrying man.
Silver: And I don’t believe that. No, sirree. I figger that you and the midwife will be hitched before the year ends.
