HITCHIN’ POST
and the Tornado Twistin’
4th of July Celebration
illustrated by Carolyn Altman
PRAISE FOR THE BOOK:
Hitchin’ Post and the Tornado Twistin’ 4th of July Celebration is a brilliantly woven story with a strong plot that will easily entertain anyone. The illustrations by Carolyn Altman are fun and engaging, complementing the story. I love how Barker has written an interesting story that will teach kids how working together as a team makes the hard work a whole lot lighter and much more rewarding. – Readers’ Favorite, 5 STARS
I received a complimentary copy of this book as part of the tour.
Hitchin’ Post and the Tornado Twistin’ 4th of July Celebration is a sweet children’s book full of Texas spirit and values.
This book has a fun cast of characters: cowboys and rabbits, yes rabbits – our main character, in fact! “Hitch” is a proud little rabbit, happy and dedicated to his ranch, and loves the big red barn. Yes, he’s small in stature, but that does not stop him from keeping up with his cowboy friends and getting the ranch work done.
From the start of the story, we see his love of the 6B’s ranch and barn, and the pride and honor with which he does his work. And no one says his work is easy. First, they have to catch an escaped bull – can’t have that, they’re about to have their annual Fourth of July celebration!
Then, a tornado threatens to upend their plans and morale drops. But you see, Hitch might be small in stature with really long ears, but his heart is large, brave, and proud. His confidence and positivity are contagious, and Hitch and his fellow cowboys and all the folks visiting for the Fourth of July celebration band together to fix the damage and make their beloved barn ready for the show! And what a show it is!
Hitchin’ Post and the Tornado Twistin’ 4th of July Celebration is told in poetic prose, rhyming at times but not as a rule. It is a fun book to read aloud as you can get into a cadence and even act out some of the scenes. The illustrations are adorable, done in a sketch style that fits well with the style of the story. I love the depiction of the beloved red barn, and how cute Hitch and his brothers are.
Both children and their adults will enjoy the spirit of Texas displayed in the entertaining character of Hitch. A fun and enjoyable story teaching the value of perseverance and Texas pride.
Julie Barker is the author of Hitchin’ Post, her debut children’s storybook. With inspiration from her West Texas roots and being surrounded by the ranching heritage, Julie is fulfilling her dream of becoming a children’s author. Along with the encouragement and beautiful illustrations from her mother and artist, Carolyn Altman, the story of Hitchin’ Post the cowboy jackrabbit was born and is now officially a series. The second book, Hitchin’ Post and the Tornado Twistin’ 4th of July Celebration, was released September 2018.
