It’s the most anticipated wedding of the year in The Sisters, when Madison Reynolds and Brash deCordova finally tie the knot!Wedding preparations are underway, but the aisle to the altar gets rockier by the minute.

Their support is humbling, but the community’s enthusiasm soon threatens to hijack the wedding. Squeeze in a suspicious death during a Texas Independence Day celebration, the needy new widow Madison befriends, and an unscrupulous politician trying to unseat Brash as chief of police, and the path seems littered with obstacles.

Madison will move mountains, however, to marry the man of her dreams. All they really need is each other, their children by their side, and a preacher to make it official. In an effort to please everyone, the couple opts for a private ceremony followed by a public celebration. It’s the perfect Wildflower Wedding, but who knew it would end in a killer reception?

Cantankerous Nigel Barrett hired In a Pinch Professional Services to find his estranged family, but it takes more than a home DNA test to locate his next of kin. Madison suspects he was searching for an heir, but when the wealthy rancher is killed at their reception, she’ll settle for finding someone to attend his funeral.

From the author of Forgotten Boxes, Plain Roots, and the Spirits of Texas Cozy Mysteries, enjoy book eight of the award-winning reader favorite The Sisters, Texas Series.

For maximum enjoyment, follow the series from the beginning. Readers say, “It’s like visiting with old friends!”

Reading Wildflower Wedding is like sipping iced tea while swinging on the front porch, sweet with a kick of caffeine.
I went into the novel expecting a romance from the title, but it looks like I missed the blossoming romance between Madison and Brash by starting with book 8 in the series. (Bummer for me!) The relationship between Brash and Madison reads real. The love they hold for each other, their family, friends, and town is foremost in their hearts. Their family, friends, and town reciprocate that love. There is an especially emotional scene during the wedding rehearsal dinner where each of the children is giving a toast. I may have had a twig or something in my eye while I was reading that scene!
So many characters inhabit the Sisters, Texas area within Wildflower Wedding. Both the main and secondary characters are individualistic and fully formed. Kudos for Ms. Willis on the character development. I will say that Granny Bert is my favorite character within the novel. She’s not only a town know-it-all, but she’s a hoot! I chuckled while reading this conversation between Madison and Granny Bert:
“As we were leaving, I caught her in the hallway, texting on her phone. So I pretended I didn’t know how to use one, and asked her to send me a text so I could see how it’s done.” [Granny Bert]
“And she believed you?” [Madison]
“Why not? I’m just a poor eighty-one-year old woman who grew up with one of those phones shaped like a candlestick. We had to ask the operator to connect us every time we wanted to talk. We didn’t have these newfangled gadgets with all the confusing buttons and those smiley yellow faces and a choice of beeps or whistles.” [Granny Bert]
She stills every scene she’s in!
The mystery within the novel has some red herrings, but, I was 90% confident of the killer before the reveal. This aspect didn’t detract from the story. I enjoyed reading the journey Madison takes. She is determined to find the killer, help her clients, and get married all in a short window of time. That’s a lot of balls to juggle at the same time.
Authors must tread along a fine line when writing long series. Enough backstory needs to be introduced to intrigue new readers. But not too much backstory so as to be repetitious and boring for the loyal readers. Ms. Willis does a admirable job with Wildflower Wedding. It is a fine representation of this balance. I found myself intrigued by the previous stories, but not confused by the introduction of characters or old story lines.
While Wildflower Wedding can be read as a stand-alone, I encourage you to check out the rest of the series. I know I’ll be checking out the other books myself! Scroll down to see links to reviews of books 1-7 on Lone Star Lit Tours.
As a side note, it’s always neat when I read books set in places I’ve visited. Washington-on-the-Brazos is a great state park. I’ll have to check the schedule for reenactors. Though, hopefully with a lot fewer dead bodies!
