Here at Chapter Break, we don’t always write a full review of every book we read. Well, now we decided to do these monthly wrap-up posts with roundups of our reviews this month and mini-reviews to fill in the gaps. Enjoy!
Arial, the Astronaut (UnicornPreneur) This was a cute little book about a unicorn who loves to draw about outer space. One day she ends up on a spaceship and has to save the day. It was super short but cute. I would have liked a few more pages about her heroically saving the day. My son even commented that it was a short book.
Call of Kythshire (Keepers of the Wellsprings Book 1) I read this one on my new (ish) Kindle. This kindle that I won in a giveaway when my son was just a baby. If anyone wants to know what mom life is like, I finally activated it this month. Anyway I liked Call of Kythshire – I especially liked the world-building and all the fairies. I liked the illustrations at the end of some chapters, it really made these adorable characters fun. The battle scenes and pacing I wasn’t as impressed with. The beginning book scenes were too slow, I had a hard time getting into it. And the final epic battle at the end wasn’t all that epic and was kind of confusing at times. But I liked our main character and her strength and honor.
Giver of Stars: I had no\low expectations for this book. But was pleasantly surprised. The audio was horrible so I switched to the actual book. Reading was a much quicker process. And had a much more emotional gut-punch of feelings. I read 60% of the book in one day! Ok, sure, I only had one day before book club to finish so I pushed through. But it really was a riveting read. I’m calling this one 4.5 Stars. Minus .5 stars for random shifts in POV, which is a major pet peeve of mine. And recommended to read, not listen.
The Book Woman of Troublesome Creek: So yes. I read both books after hearing about the controversy. Honestly, I don’t see the problem. Yes, both are about the same subject (the women librarians and their horses). And there are some similar scenes. But otherwise, these books are not the same. As someone from book club put it, Book Woman is from an insider’s point of view. And Giver of Stars is from an (mainly) outsider’s point of view. Honestly, I did like both, but I liked Giver of Stars better. Probably because I read it first. Overall, this one is more emotional than Giver of Stars. Some of the scenes are difficult to read. Good character development. With a mule who hates men! Worth checking out.

Thanks for sharing your mini-reviews! Sorry the audiobook for the JoJo Moyes book didn’t work for you, but I’m glad the book itself was better.

I read The Book Woman of Troublesome Creek last summer. I was so intrigued by the research and use of actual facts interwoven into the story. PArts were difficult to read for me, but others brought me joy.

I’m a fan of the one sentence reviews myself, Sherry! Short and to the point.
I often do mini-reviews, although even those seem to keep getting longer and longer. You can check out my monthly wrap-up in the link below! Have a great February.
