Julie’s Review:
How Big is Your Brave? is a great children’s book written by a best-selling author. Ruth Soukup has written many books for adults, both teaching blogging and teaching to conquer your fears! Now she’s branched her “Do It Scared (TM)” empire into a children’s book teaching the little ones to be more resilient and find their brave.
The story is a sweet little bunny Zippy who dreams of outer space. One day she finds out that her town is going to have a space camp, and her fear tries to keep her from signing up and making the most of that camp. But she learns to conquer that fear and overcome the hurdles on the road to getting closer to her dream.
I love that the book shows family members supporting her, teaching her life lessons passed down through generations.
My 5-year-old really enjoyed this book and has already asked me to read it on three separate occasions.
The story ends with the space camp members creating and decorating model rockets.
Parents and teachers can also obtain an activity kit and curriculum guide for this book. All you need to do is submit your order # and they will email you the files.
The activity kit is great for things to do at home after reading How Big is Your Brave. It comes with bracelets you can make and a maze to find your way through. There’s a rocket you can decorate your own way (like our main character Zippy) and a garden you can draw to represent the veggies Zippy’s brother Gus would grow. You can also print out a space club membership ID for Zippy’s club she wants to start.
The How Big is Your Brave curriculum guide has some great discussion questions to chat about in small groups after reading aloud in class. There are also activities you can do with older grade-school kids (who can write). There’s a vocabulary section where the kids can determine what the words are based on their context in the story. Kids can also draw a picture copying their favorite illustration in the story and explaining what is happening with the W-H questions. The story is built on family mottos and there is an activity page in the curriculum to match the mottos with Zippy’s actions in the story.
I definitely give this a full-5 stars and recommend it to kids little and less little.
