Told in alternating timelines from World War II to 1992, debut author Shanessa Gluhm’s Enemies of Doves is a tale of family secrets, jealousy, and deception perfect for fans of Kate Morton and Katherine Webb.
On a summer night in 1932, twelve-year-old Joel Fitchett wanders into an East Texas diner badly beaten and carrying his unconscious brother, Clancy. Though both boys claim they have no memory of what happened, the horrific details are etched into their minds as deep as the scar left across Joel’s face.
Thirteen years later, both men still struggle with the aftershocks of that long-ago night and the pact they made to hide the truth. When they find themselves at the center of a murder investigation, they make a decision that will change everything. A second lie, a second pact, and, for a time, a second chance. In 1991 college student Garrison Stark travels to Texas chasing a rumor that Clancy Fitchett is his biological grandfather. Clancy has been missing since 1946, and Garrison hopes to find him and, in doing so, find a family. What he doesn’t expect to discover is a tangle of secrets spanning sixty years involving Clancy, Joel, and the woman they both loved, Lorraine.
PRAISE for Enemies of Doves:
“Enemies of Doves weaves a timeline of events that makes for compelling reading. It’s an ecological system of interlocking decisions, discoveries, and circumstances that spans some sixty years of love, danger, and revelations.” —D. Donovan, senior reviewer, Midwest Book Review
“I’ve read some amazing thriller and suspense stories this year, but Enemies of Doves takes the mid-year prize. I’m not one for dual timelines, but this one was perfection with the fifty-year time-span moving forward in tandem. Garrison’s search will cause time to collide, unlocking a lifetime of secrets, and THE PLOT TWIST OF 2020!” —author Felicia Denise
“Shanessa Gluhm is a brilliant writer. I very seldom read a book that I cannot figure out how it will end, but this one literally blew me away!” —Lori Thomas Harrington, author of The Point
One thing Enemies of Doves has become known for is its plot twist. One reviewer called it, “The plot twist of 2020.” I don’t know about you, but I love those moments in a book that change everything you thought you knew. Here are my top ten literary plot twists (spoiler free!).
- Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn: I don’t think we can talk about surprise twists and not mention this one. It’s literally the poster child for the plot twist and started a modern trend. After all, how many times have you heard a book declared, “The next Gone Girl”?
- Rebecca by Daphne Du Maurier: I love gothic literature and amazing plot twists; put them together, and you have Rebecca, a book so creepy and engaging, you don’t even care that you never know the main character’s name.
- Defending Jacob by William Landay: I wasn’t expecting a huge plot twist in a crime novel and then … wow! This book is riveting, unsettling, and absolutely shocking.
- The House at Riverton by Kate Morton: Downton Abbey meets Rebecca in this period piece with an unexpected and tragic twist. I read this almost ten years ago, and the ending still haunts me.
- The Kind Worth Killing by Peter Swanson: What. An. Ending. This cat-and-mouse psychological thriller has twists and turns everywhere. I’ve never understood why it didn’t get more hype.
- The Girl on The Train by Paula Hawkins: I do love a good unreliable narrator and couldn’t resist a book with three of them. The fact that you couldn’t trust any character made the ending of this thriller impossible to guess.
- Lock Every Door by Riley Sager: Every single Riley Sager book is amazing. He knows how to raise the hairs on the back of your neck and shock you with multiple twists. This book contained by far the creepiest plot twist I’ve ever read! I get chills just thinking about it.
- The Woman in the Window by A. J. Finn: This is probably my favorite thriller. I loved the Hitchcock feel and multiple twists. There is a film coming out, so make sure you read the book first!
- I Let You Go by Clare Mackintosh: In a million years, I never saw this twist coming and never expected it to come at the halfway mark of the book. Genius.
- The Secret Keeper by Kate Morton: I was so invested in this story and the characters that I would have loved it no matter what, but the twist literally made me drop my book on the floor and cemented it as one of my favorite books of all time.
