Interview with Author Chasta Hamilton

(1) Describe the book in 10 words or less for people who are just learning about it.
The power to make difficult changes to improve your life.

(2) Is there anything you would like people to take away from your book?

It’s never too late to re-write your narrative, on page or in real life.

(3) To date, what is your favorite (or most difficult) chapter you have ever written?

This book is about a very personally challenging time, and I had to revisit a lot of negative communication and correspondence in my research. It’s not always easy to relive the past, but it can be very cathartic especially when you’ve taken action to make your life and your world a better place.

(4) Do you have any odd (writing) habits?

I think my odd habit is my lack of habits. I write when I can, on my not so fancy laptop, usually in the dining room of my condo with coffee and Pop Tarts (S’Mores or Frosted Cherry).

(5) Share some advice for aspiring authors. What advice would you give to your younger self?

Go for it! Just start writing. Whether it is writing a book, journaling, blogging, or any type of idea capture, words on paper is a powerful experience. It’ll get you going, and the more you practice, the better you’ll be!

And, to my younger self: hang in there. Life is a wild ride. Stick with your convictions.

Title: Trash the Trophies

Author: Chasta Hamilton

Release Date: August 11, 2020 / Houndstooth Press

Blurb: In the world of competitive dance—biased scoring, skimpy costumes, and toxic rivalries are the additional line items of a bill that exceeds thousands of dollars. Time and money are at stake for parents, but reputation is also at risk for students and studios. With no regulation, this third-party industry leaves you asking yourself the same question after every competition: Is it worth it?

For Chasta Hamilton, six years of sending dancers to competition was six years too many. She swore off competitive dance and rewrote her curriculum to focus on the whole person within each dancer. In Trash the Trophies, Chasta shows you how she challenged preconceived notions of success in the dance industry and embraced camaraderie, effective leadership, and philanthropic initiative to transform her studio. With the four pillars of her intensive training program—technique, performance, community, and character—you’ll learn how to increase ROI for everyone involved.

Dance is a commitment to principles; an art form beyond rankings and judgment. This book will show you how to put meaning back into movement, and joy back into the dance studio.
