Spend a day in the life of a livestock guardian dog! Jax the Great Pyrenees has a big job. After the Texas sun goes down, it’s up to him and two other LGDs to protect their ranch from predators. But when the lead dog gets hurt, Jax and a
young pup are the only ones left to protect the flock through the night. Told from the dog’s perspective, this story also includes back matter about the breed and role of the working dog.
Thanks to Catherine Stier for providing this book for review as part of the tour. Review of Ava:
I am Ava, Seeker in the Snow is a sweet book about a friendly and brave dog named Ava. The story is told from the point of view of the dog, which makes it super cute and fun to Ava loves her human, her job, and her fellow ski patrol family. She’s learned so much in her training as an avalanche rescue dog (aka “avy dog”). She’s ready for her chance to prove herself, and boy does she!
This is the first chapter book I’ve read with my son. He’s 5, and we’ve only done children’s books so far. While he was confused about why the illustrations were in black and white, he really was into the story. The illustrations were lovely, and there was almost one for every other page. It was great to help visualize the snow, the dogs, and what was going on.
I expected to read the book over several days, but we ended up devouring most of it one weekend day after reading the first two chapters at bedtime the evening before. I love it when my little one asks for one more chapter.
The Dog’s Day series is great for introducing kids to different types of jobs and how these amazing working dogs help people in everyday life. They’ve been learning about community helpers at school so we got to add ski patrol and avalanche rescuers to our list of community helpers.
The book is great for reading aloud because it flows well, and the words are large and easy to read while trying to show the pages and pictures to the kid running circles in front of you. My voice didn’t get tired from reading almost 90 pages out loud in the span of two days.
It would be a great book for emergent readers as well, as most of the words used are simple and straightforward, the concepts are easy to grasp even if the words are new, such as the job descriptions.
I asked him what he liked about the book and he says he really liked the dog and how she digs in the snow to save people. So hey, he was listening! It has now been a few days and he still asks me questions about the dog and her rescue job.

[…] I am Ava, Seeker in the Snow: Read a Physical Book, […]
That’s the best praise you can give a children’s book — the child wants more & continues to think about it after the pages are read. Thanks for a great review.
Agreed, Kristine!
