New Life, New World, New Problems
Alexandria Duvalier’s new life on the magical world of Meredith takes a shattering twist when her father, the Duke of Wheel, pledges her hand in marriage to the cruel lord, Rodric Regret. Desperate to escape his clutches, Alex flees the city with the help of her friend, Tell Tollet, a handsome lieutenant in the city guard. But their freedom is short-lived when Rodric’s brutal brother, Stefan, joins in the pursuit.
Hotheaded Prince Tal, heir to the throne of Meredith, has but one goal: kill the Dark Queen and destroy the Veil, the enchanted barrier which has ensnared generations of his people. He discovers a breach in the magical wall and leads an army through, bent on completing his mission.
When an unusual and potent magic calls to him, he follows its trail back to Alex. Thrown together by circumstances and chased across the wilderness by the ruthless Lord Stefan, Tal and Alex are drawn to each other by the greatest magic of all—love. Now they just need to stay alive . . .

I’ve been reading a lot of Sci Fi lately, skipping Fantasy and Magical Realism books all together. I’ve just not been in a Sword and Sorcery kind of place mentally. But the draw to Fantasy is always there, in the back of my mind. Especially when it’s a battle of good against evil! Escape from Wheel ticks off all the boxes in the Fantasy\Magical Realism genres and is worth the read.

Mr. Clifton’s writing is visually descriptive and magical. (Sorry. I couldn’t help the pun!) For example:
They oozed a dark evil which made the black marble floor look radiant by comparison. Insatiable hunger burned in their eyes, an appetite no amount of cruelty, murder, or slaughter could satisfy.
Another paragraph of the novel where traveling between magical gates is described really kicked my imagination into gear.
Short chapters made the plot and reading move along quickly. The primary and secondary characters are fully developed. Alexandria (Alex) is exploring her new world, skills, and relationships. Prince Tal is doing his best to save his home world. What’s more, the ‘evil’ characters are vile and unpleasant. I can see them plotting with their evil laughs and finger waggling like Mr. Burns from The Simpsons! Alternating narrators, more than just the two main characters of Alex and Tal, ensure that the reader knows what plotlines are happening and where.

The fantasy/magical realism aspects of Escape from Wheel are on point. Here’s a list of elements I really enjoyed:
  • Flying horses. Let me repeat. Flying. Horses. How cool would that be! There is even a nice paragraph that explains how to ride the flying horses!
  • Emperor Wasps. The size of horses. So even more flying horses. This time with stingers!
  • Melded animals. The Dark Queen creates chimera from any and every combination of beasts. Including combining a scorpion and a dog. Wrap your mind around that!
  • Deep Pocket – Tal’s satchel that could rival Hermione’s bag any time. Including books that are miniaturized that I’m very jealous of!
  • A tent to equal the one used by the Weasley family. I could totally get into camping if it were in Artemis Thurgood’s tent!
And so many more!

I do want to point out that Escape from Wheel is the second book in series. Starting with the second novel in a fantasy series was a struggle for me. I didn’t connect with the characters or story until I had read 40% of the novel. There is a pivotal scene involving Alex and some mirrors that really bridged the gap in knowledge from not reading the first book in the series. That scene was the clear turning point in my enjoyment of the novel. I will likely go back and read the first novel (once I catch up with everything else going on in my life!). The first 40% of the novel was ok for me; but that second 60% was phenomenal. If you are reading Escape from Wheel and finding yourself struggling like I did, stick with the reading. The novel is very worth it! I even had one of those Oh, Crud moments when I realized I was at 90%. You know the one. Where you figure out that there is NOT ENOUGH book left to wrap up all the plot lines! I’m certainly in for reading the next book in the series after that ending!

With action and adventure, great writing, and excellent characters, Escape from Wheel is a fantasy book for any reader!
