We’re starting a new feature here on Chapter Break called Chat About Covers. ‘Cause you know we all judge books by covers, whether we admit it or not. We judge the style, the color and font choices, and just the overall look. That might not keep us from reading the book, but we do still judge.

Ooh what a fun and creepy cover. Yes, I’m a bit terrified of that sea monster on the cover. The tentacles look sharp, and he definitely looks like an evil beastie. Is the octopus wearing some kind of outer superhero suit, or is that just the monster’s skin? *shudders*

I like the font! Crisp, clean, well positioned yellow against the dark sea green. I love the sunbeam, such a great way to add lighting and depth to the image.

The title is confusing to me because is the house in the sea? Why always? I might be curious to read the blurb. Ok so I did read the blurb. This is apparently the 4th book in a series, about Dragons? Sea monster dragons? The blurb is about fighting against an evil enemy, and possibly one of their own becoming evil. But what does it have to do with dragons or octopi? I’m even more confused.

Maybe it’s the Cancer in me (happy birthday month to me!), or that 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea is one of the first books I remember reading as a kid, but I am always drawn to covers with sea creatures on them. I don’t really care what they are about. I. Am. In.

Let’s first discuss how does one put armor onto a squid? No clue. But that person is a genius! The arms are articulating. The eyes are menacing. There are even cool spikes coming out of the top of the head. Overall, the squid works for me. No clue what the topic of the book is!

I like how the squid is lit from behind, like the sun is filtering through very deep water. Feels very nature documentary-ish.

The title and author’s name are simple, clear, and easy to read. Two thumbs up for that!

Given this cover belongs to a high fantasy series about dragons is even more intriguing. I may even check out the first in the series.
