Here at Chapter Break, we don’t always write a full review of every book we read. Well, now we decided to do these monthly wrap-up posts with roundups of our reviews this month and mini-reviews to fill in the gaps. Enjoy!
Witch Inheritance (A Mackenzie Coven Mystery Book 1) This was a little campy, a little fun, a little silly, and pretty good for a lazy airplane flight. This is a story about a girl who wanted nothing to do with her witch inheritance until she got tricked into accepting it. Then she apparently is the only one able to go do this job, where something sinister is happening at a family estate. With the help of her cousins, helping remotely as witchy projections, they try to keep things from getting out of hand, not always successfully. Like I said, cute campy, and fun, but not too deep of a story.
Instant Karma: Fine, if unremarkable YA contemporary romance. Nothing bad. But nothing exciting. Plot was predictable. My favorite character was a secondary one, if that says anything. Honestly, given how many Marissa Meyer books I’ve read, this one did not live up to my expectations. 3 1/2 Stars.
Just Folking Around: Quick, fast, free, and short! Everything I was looking for in a novel. I didn’t really have a lot of interest in Jackson’s story, but this did pique my interest!
Project Hail Mary: This is the book for the sci-fi skeptics out there. It’s emotional (all the emotions!), has empathetic characters, and shows how earthlings could actually work together. Yes, there is a lot of math and science. (I did learn the importance of trigonometry in case you always wondered when you would use that!) I appreciated that Ryland was a teacher who had a broad scope of knowledge that came in handy on many occasions. And also shows how important science teachers are to our future. Any discussion of the plot would be a spoiler, so I’ll leave it at thrilling adventure with heart. And do yourself a favor. Listen to the audio narration for this one. It’s over the top worth it! 15 / 5 Stars!
Even Tree Nymphs Get the Blues: So there I was, scrolling through my Audible library looking for a short listen. Bonus if it crossed off some bingo squares! Lo and behold, we have this book. I have no idea when or why I downloaded this, but that does happen frequently! As it’s novel 2.5 in the series, it was a bit strange getting to know the characters of Mystic Bayou when they were introduced in books I hadn’t read. I did enjoy Ingrid, especially her obsession with ice cream. This novel is more of a getting to know you romance than a insta-love romance. Overall enjoyable and quick. And interesting enough that I might even check out the others in the series.
Books we reviewed this month:
- [1 Jul] Wings of Fire by Stephanie Mirro ★★★★
- [23 Jul] Wishes Hopes and Dreams / Deseos Esperanzas Y Sueños by Stacey Russo ★★★★
- [28 Jul] Deadly Business by Anita Dickason ★★★★½
Project Hail Mary has been on my list, and you are making me want to read it even more! And Witch Inheritance sounds like something I would enjoy. Looking that one up now!
Instant Karma still sits on my TBR pile unread. I bought it, letting the hype get to me and then of course life and other books come first. I like that a secondary character was drawn so well that this one was a favorite. Hope your August has been a great one!
Oh no! I’m sad to hear Instant Karma didn’t live up to your expectations. I read it earlier this year and I’m honestly surprised I liked it as much as I did just because I’m not a big fan of contemporaries in general. But hey, no two people ever read the same book, right?
Hope you have a great August!

I actually enjoyed Instant Karma where I don’t really care for the Lunar Chronicles by Meyer. But yeah, it wasn’t necessarily anything unique or original, I agree! Hope that you have a great August!
