Chat About Covers: Paws and Probable Cause

 

We’re starting a new feature here on Chapter Break called Chat About Covers. ‘Cause you know we all judge books by covers, whether we admit it or not. We judge the style, the color and font choices, and just the overall look. That might not keep us from reading the book, but we do still judge.

 

OMGosh it’s a kitty cover! I mean, it’s totally goofy but I’m here for it. Especially holding the magnifying lens.

But why is the kitty shocked? Or scared? How bad is this mystery? Clearly happening at night, is this nocturnal creature kitty finding some scary or surprising facts? And then I read the full title and it’s not just a kitty sleuth, but a shifter stuck in cat form. That’s even more fun!

I’m hit or miss with cozy mystery as a genre because many of them aren’t really solving anything, it feels like they stumble upon the actual villain but the rest is random happenings. But some are fun in the meantime. And how can you go wrong with a kitty sleuth?

I kind of like the purples and blues together, but the green kind of gives me side-eye.

The cover picture itself is kind of poor quality. The cat is fine, but the combination of the cat on top of the desk with stuff, the magnifying glass. It’s not seamless so it’s a bit distracting.

I’d be curious about the story though.

 

Well this screams cozy mystery! And I kind of love the idea of a cat solving crimes!

I am a bit creeped out by the shock face on the cat, especially in the eyes, but the paw with the magnifying lens is adorable. And the setting of a crime scene, with the investigation kit, brings home the mystery theme.

I like the purple\blue\green color scheme. The colors blend well and give me that whole nighttime mystery vibe.

The title font is ok. I find it a bit difficult to read. But I do appreciate the monogram, series title, and author information all matching.
