Mini Reviews Wrap Up December 2021

Here at Chapter Break, we don’t always write a full review of every book we read. Well, now we decided to do these monthly wrap-up posts with roundups of our reviews this month and mini-reviews to fill in the gaps. Enjoy!

Black Crow, White Snow: It was unique I suppose and I liked the gender swap, but the story, even short as it was, didn’t keep my attention.

Diamonds Aren’t Forever: Heist Ladies, Book 1 – It was alright. Cute concept of the ladies doing a heist to get the stolen heirloom necklace back, but it also wasn’t as exciting or fun as I hoped. Another ho-hum reading month for me.

Covet: Honestly, I’m not loving this as much as the others in the series. Too much introspection and moodiness. Which Vega brother will Grace choose? Moody Vega brothers? Even more yawn. And If I hear Grace talk about pulling on her platinum string once more, I might scream. There are some scenes that I enjoyed, especially the pep talk Hudson gives Grace. But I was underwhelmed by this one.

The Cowboy Who Saved Christmas: I love a good anthology. Especially when I win one on Goodreads! I think this brings my total book winnings over the many years to four. That’s right. Four. But anyway. One with the review. Father Goose by Jodi Thomas: I’m not much into the Insta-love trope. But I do think Trapper and Emery have a good starting point for their relationship. But what I really enjoyed about this one is the Chapman sisters. For so short a story, all five sisters are well-developed and individual characters. I’d definitely revist these characters. The Mistletoe Promise by Sharla Lovelace: This is a rekindled romance\enemies to lovers situation. Josie and Ben had a relationship, but a very bad falling out. There is certainly a lot of fire and heat running between these two characters! And it turns out I’ve already read the Linday Broday story (Almost Christmas) in a previous anthology. Still a cute story, though!

The Masked City: I didn’t love this as much as I loved the first book in this series. There is a lot of Fae\Dragon dynamics and less hunting for books and solving crimes. I missed the Irene\Kai\Vale team dynamic. I did still enjoy Irene doing everything she can to save the day, but enjoyed the book much more once the team is reunited. But what was most disappointing was the sudden ending. I was listening to the audio and did that whole eyebrow raise looking at my car radio wondering if I missed some part of the download. Let’s just say the ending is very abrupt. I’ll still likely read the next in the story, though.

Laws of Physics: Time (Hypothesis #6): Finally, some resolution (and consummation) to the Mona\Abram story. And it was worth the wait! I really appreciate how both characters are open and honest about their feelings and what they are looking for in a relationship. Overall, I quite enjoyed this series of novels.

Memento (The Illuminae Files #0.5): After all this time spent with the Aurora crew, I enjoyed revisiting A.I.D.A.N. and the crew of the Alexander. This time around are some different characters from the rest of the series. But what I really enjoyed is the rationale (if you can say that about an AI), behind A.I.D.A.N.’s processes BEFORE he goes off the rails. A great full cast reading. And I love the censored curse words!

I read Illuminae and Gemina and enjoyed them and the format. I want to finish the series this year and I have the third book on my TBR pile. I forgot about Memento until I read your post. I hope your 2022 is going well so far!

  2. I’ve only read Illuminae, but really enjoyed it and need to read on in the series! I like your idea of mini-reviews at the end of the month. I tried to get all my reviews done this past week for 2021 so I could basically start 2022 “fresh”. Hope you have a good January!
