Here at Chapter Break, we don’t always write a full review of every book we read. Well, now we decided to do these monthly wrap-up posts with roundups of our reviews this month and mini-reviews to fill in the gaps. Enjoy!
The Unlikeable Demon Hunter: Sting: A Devilishly Funny Urban Fantasy Romance (Nava Katz Book 2) OK WOW! I got the first book as a freebie, and really liked it. So I bought the second book. And I loved it! Such a great Urban Fantasy with everything I love – snarky kick ass heroine, studly love interest, personal and character growth, solving mysteries, and cherry on top of overcoming personal demons and saving yourself while saving your loved ones. Total win in my book and I guess I’ll have to keep buying the rest of the series.
Serendipity: Honestly, the only aspect of this collection of YA Trope updates is that there is a lot of diversity across the characters and stories. In the end, the stories were fine. Some slightly more memorable than others. But none that stand out as amazing. I couldn’t even pinpoint which tropes some of the stories represented. I didn’t hate it. But also didn’t love it.
Court: At 720 pages\24 hours, there is plenty to unpack here. Most of which are giant spoilers. There were a number of WTH moments that I’m sure Hudson and Remy saw coming, but I did not. Though they make perfect sense after the fact. I appreciate how Hudson is the mate Grace wants and needs. He’s there to support and encourage her. The ragtag team of heroes grows closer together in this novel. Honestly, my only real complaint is that these novels could really benefit from some other narrators besides Grace. And no. I’m not talking about Hudson’s two chapters. I’m talking about I want to know what’s going on with the rest of the team when Grace isn’t around. (See Aurora Cycle for reference!)
An Artless Demise: Fine? I didn’t hate this. But I also didn’t love it. I found the mystery to be back seat to more details on Kiera’s past/present life. Her father-in-law hates her; the peerage hates her; she’s pregnant. All of these storylines are fine. But I would really rather have more adventures and chasing after the baddies. Heather Wilds is still doing an amazing job with the narration, though.
Beard Necessities: I skipped Book 6 in this series after reading the trigger warnings at the beginning. So on to book #7! Billy has been mostly absent from the other novels, so its been interesting getting to know him. Plus some great Cletus machinations! What I really enjoyed in this novel is how Billy and Claire figure out that there’s no balance sheet in a relationship. That’s a good lesson. And the epilogue was bitter-sweet. Those Winston’s are a bunch of breeders for sure! A good conclusion to this series.
Finlay Donovan Knocks ‘Em Dead: Oh my dang! These books are so good! I watched an interview with the author speaking about how the books are similar to Janet Evanovich. And I fully embrace that. This time around, Finlay is still getting into mishaps. And lots more flirting with Detective Nick. And high speed car chases! And bad guys. Anyway. So fun. Read these books right now! 12/5. Highly Recommended.
