Notable Quotables from
In Honor’s Defense
By Karen Witemeyer
One of the things I ask my launch team to do as they read my book for the first time is to make note of favorite quotes. They might be funny or romantic or include a clever turn of phrase – whatever strikes them as compelling. I love seeing what touches them, and it’s always interesting to see how many of them select the same quotes.
Here are some of the favorites that my readers pulled from In Honor’s Defense.
- “Invisible people rarely received correspondence. A fact Damaris Baxter had accepted long ago.” (First line of the novel,)
- “Not only was Damaris on the shelf, she was in the back corner behind the knickknacks, collecting dust.”
- “Someday he would accept her affection. Return it even. After all, love was the strongest force on earth. Because it wasn’t of earth. It was divine. God’s very nature. It would win the day eventually, if she held true to her course.” (Damaris thinking about her defiant nephew.)
- “Contentment isn’t chained to a certain set of circumstances, Luke. It’s portable. You can take it with you wherever you go.”
- “She’d swallowed her pride so many times, all the edges had been worn smooth.”
- “Luke had kept his hands to himself, but the intimacy between him and Damaris just kept growing, like plant shoots undeterred by cobblestones, winding through tiny crevices to sprout green in the midst of a stone street.”
- “She’d persevere, even if the thought of asserting herself among strangers delighted her as much as the prospect of being dragged behind a horse. By her hair. Through a bed of cacti.”
- “You’re a warrior, Luke Davenport. And warriors aren’t formed by ease and tranquility. They are forged in battle.”
- “He’s a Horseman… As opposite from my quiet bookish existence as one can be. Yet he actively seeks my opinion. Not only seeks it but honors it. Honors me. He looks at me as if I were a rare treasure he’d never thought he’d find, and when I look at him…It’s as if all my odd, misshaped edges finally fit somewhere.”

What great quotes! I especially like the one about contentment. So true!
