Julie’s Review:
Thanks to author and Lone Star Book Blog Tours for providing this opportunity to review A Time to Fly! I received the book free in exchange for my honest review.
My son and I read A Time To Fly together. Actually, he read it to me, as he has a daily 20-minute reading assignment for second grade. I love that I can share with him not just the love of reading together, but also reviewing books together.
A Time to Fly is a very sweet book about a baby bird afraid to leave the nest, and a mommy bird who is very sweetly encouraging him to fly. I especially thought this was sweet because the story uses gentle parenting methods which is contrary to the trope we hear about birds kicking their baby birds out of the next to force them to learn to fly. Instead, the mommy bird tells baby bird a story about the family, about the baby bird’s hatching, and growing. And all the time she’s preparing the baby bird physically and emotionally to fly. By the time the story mommy bird is telling has concluded, the baby bird feels strong and brave and doesn’t even think about staying in the nest.
The bird, you see, feels comfortable in the nest and doesn’t want to leave. I get it, I like to crawl into my comfort spot too and just have everyone let me be. But the world doesn’t let you just hide. The weather is changing and the baby bird needs to join the rest of the family in a different location. So flying is required.
I also loved the illustrations. They are such pretty drawings, and look like water color brush strokes. I love how you can see individual paint lines that make up the overall image. It gives such a nostalgic feeling to the experience reading the book. I often have to tell my son to slow down in the reading and actually look at the illustrations. They add so much depth to the story and are an important part of children’s books.
My son very much enjoyed reading this. I think he recognizes the gentle way the mother bird helped her son fly, and hopefully sees that in my parenting with him, helping him get past his fears and try the next new thing in his life. He said he liked our little bluebird friend and enjoyed his journey to fly from the nest to join his family.
