We’re chatting about covers on Chapter Break. ‘Cause you know we all judge books by covers, whether we admit it or not. We judge the style, the color and font choices, and just the overall look. That might not keep us from reading the book, but we do still judge.

Oooh wow what a funny cover. There’s so much going on like at first glance it’s a little too busy but then I start digging into the details and it’s quite fascinating. I’m guessing this is going for a red riding hood feel but I haven’t read the blurb to find out why.

The details on the wolf are really good – that’s great art work. The girl on the other hand has few details and isn’t that interesting. And the red hair against the reddish wolf isn’t working well for me.

I like the font. I really dig the backwards S and R – that’s just fun to me. I like to enjoy fun with fonts. But, I will say the bright white font on the almost black board is a bit too much for my eyes. I don’t like white on black, it’s too jarring.

The spider web and spider on the board is a nice touch. I quite like that.

The more I look at this cover the more details I see that I didn’t see right away. Like the scythe above the title. And the reaper in the corner. But it’s all so much. But definitely enough to catch my interest.

Wait – what wolf? I’m seeing a dragon! Which, tbh, is cool. But I’d rather see more dragon and less cartoon girl. I find the girl to be rather distracting.

I completely agree with Julie that at first glance, this cover is way too busy. But it does have some cool details. I especially like the title on the sign. That has a creepy horror vibe that I’m digging. The hands holding the sign are also well executed.

The squiggly fonts work here, in that Scooby Doo kind of way. I like that aspect as well.

Overall, I’d say loose the girl and the cottage and this would be an all-around much better cover.
