K.E. Bonner’s
WOW! WOMEN ON WRITING TOUR
OF
Witching Moon
Witching Moon by K.E. Bonner
Book Summary
Every once in an eon, when the Earth eclipses the moon on a winter solstice, an immortal is born under a witching moon. Anne has always had the strangest feelings—memories she couldn’t place; strangers she inexplicably yearned for. After she rescues the enigmatic Phillip from a shipwreck, her comfortable life on the island of Cusabo is shattered, and the mystery of her destiny starts to fall into place. Anne leaves behind the life she’s always known and sets out with Phillip on an arduous journey to Amaranth, where her ancient family awaits her. But the path is dark and daunting, and Anne’s powers have only just begun to manifest.

Author Interview
What do you do when you are not writing?
I work as an Anesthesiologist’s Assistant, A.K.A. Anesthesia Physician’s Assistant. I put people to sleep and wake them up when they have surgery. I’ve been doing this since I graduated Emory University in 1994. It is a high stress, technical job, and one of the reasons I began writing was to decompress. I also swim religiously. Swimming, like writing, is therapy for me. When I am swimming all I can think about is my next breath. It is meditative to only think about breathing for 50 minutes, five times a week.
I walk my dog, Ruby. I hang out with my husband and our two sons. I love to travel and to meet new people. I read 3-5 books a month, I love to cook, I dabble in painting, and I’ve recently started to garden.
Have you been able to incorporate your previous experience (Job/education) in your writing?
Every thing that I’ve ever done, along with everyone I’ve ever met, is incorporated in my writing. Every book that I’ve ever read, movie I’ve ever seen, and piece of art I’ve ever loved has been absorbed by my brain and infused into my writing.
That said, I do have a plan to write a book about a 24 year old lady who gets her first anesthesia job fresh out of grad school and the steep learning curve that she has to climb; the sexual harassment she has to navigate, and the complexities of surviving her first real job in a hospital surrounded by old school nurses who eat their young, psychopathic surgeons, and drug addicted anesthesiologists.
What are some books or authors that you recommend?
Bird by Bird by Anne Lamont for general writing
On Writingby Stephen King for general writing
The Mostly True Adventures Of Homer P. Figg by Rodman Philbrick for pacing and voice.
Hattie Big Sky by Kirby Larson for pacing, story, and characterization.
All Over But The Shoutin’ by Rick Bragg for memoir and voice.
The Water is Wide by Pat Conroy, Pat Conroy is my favorite southern writer
Where The Wild Things Areby Maurice Sendak , I love this book so much.
Casteby Isabel Wilkerson, I love a book that opens my eyes to a new way of thinking.
What do you do when a new idea jumps out at you while you’re working on a book? Do you chase the squirrel? Do you finish your current project first?
I am a magnet for new ideas, good and bad. If an idea appears and won’t stop pestering me, I take a few days off of my current project to outline the new idea, then I go back to my current project. I have 5 book idea outlines sitting in a desk drawer right now. Ideas are magical. If an idea flies into my head and I swat it away or do not acknowledge it, that idea will go search for another writer who will give it the attention it deserves. I treat all ideas with reverence and awe in the hope that they will keep calling on me.
Is there anything that you would like people to take away from you book?
Every act of kindness will come back to you. I’m old enough to have seen karma in action many times, and I am here to tell you that if you put hate out to the world you will receive hate in return. Every bully has a bully for a dad or brother or uncle. Every mean girl has a mean mom or sister. It is up to you to turn your back on meanness and choose kindness.
Perseverance is vital. Never, ever, ever give up. Finish what you start. I know many people who are smart and talented that give up when the going gets hard. I believe that perseverance is more important than talent or intelligence. When the going gets tough, put your head down and power through, then look back and know that you can do hard things.
About the Author
K. E. Bonner, author of Witching Moon, was always the first kid to sit down during a spelling bee. It wasn’t until she was an adult that she was diagnosed with dyslexia, which explained why she always had to study three times harder than her peers. Being dyslexic taught her perseverance and kindness, her two favorite attributes. She lives in Georgia with her husband, two sons, and two dogs. When not writing, she loves to read, swim, explore new places, and meet fascinating people. If you have a dog, she would love to scratch behind its ears and tell it what a good pup it is.
