For this discussion post, we joining the Tell Me Something Tuesday challenge run by Jen at That’s What I’m Talking About. Here’s the topic for this week. What are your least favorite tropes?
Julie:
I typically hate the journey plot trope. That’s one where the characters are going on a quest. And they walk. And walk. And walk. And talk a lot along the way, but nothing much happens. But then they finally arrive to their place and a big ass battle takes place. Maybe some better pacing, huh? I get so bored with all that walking.
I also am getting sick of the will they won’t they romances. I know many people love them – but they are just annoying. And boring if you ask me.
Lynn:
I didn’t read ahead on the conversation topics and already posted the trope I can’t stand the most – unreliable narrators. Not. A. Fan. I want to be able to trust the narrator. That’s what they are there for! Of the books I’ve read with unreliable narrators, WHERE DID YOU GO, BERNADETTE stands out. Could not stand Bernadette. She’s horrible to her neighbors and then just walks away from her family.
Most of the tropes we normally think of are in romance novels. On that front, I’m not a fan of Friends to Lovers. Which makes sense, given that my favorite trope is Enemies to Lovers. Personally, if you are friends, there is less spark and more the convivence factor. I’d rather keep someone as a friend. I’m not going to want to hang out with someone I’ve seen naked later if the romance doesn’t work out.
What about you? Any hated tropes to share?

In the romance genre, my least favorite is enemies to lovers and the love triangle. But I agree, an unreliable narrator is harsh. I have to second guess everything!

Hah, Jen! Unreliable narrators ARE the worst!
I mostly read romance, so I have quite a few tropes I try to avoid at all costs. This may be an unpopular opinion, but I’m over the billionaire (pretty woman) scenario. The majority of novels written with this trope are so repetitive. I also try to stay away from Insta-Love stories and the “FAKE” scenario, whether it’s fake fiancee, fake dating, or faking a marriage. The first couple romances I read with this Faking it trope, I loved… but then the repetition and the eye-rolling kicked in. I’m open to finding books that are in this trope but completely outside the norm. As of right now, though, I haven’t found that diamond in the rough.
Agreed completely, Alecia. I’d forgotten about those! But yes to avoiding all those tropes!
