There are so many great lessons to learn in Unseen Johnny. I think you can have some great conversations with kids and grownups about this book.
I feel for the kid, I do, being kind and helpful but not feeling noticed. Especially during the time of captains picking their team mates. Man that brings me back to some lonely memories.
It is so important to remember to be kind, if you have the opportunity, even if you don’t get recognized. As we get older, grownups forget kindness in our hurry to succeed or beat someone else out at a prize or goal we wanted. But it’s the kids who help each other, who take care of a friend who fell down, who share their lunch, who care – those are the kids that grow into the kind of people we need as adults.
The ending was so sweet, and really shows that we internalize our feelings so much that we think no one is noticing. But if we keep being kind, and caring, someone will notice. Someone is always watching.
The illustrations in the book are cute, though a bit plain. You can follow the story of Johnny’s day and how his face gets more and more sad as the day goes on.
The writing is simple and straight forward, easy for even early readers to follow along and get the lessons that can help shape their character.
