For this discussion post, we joining the Tell Me Something Tuesday challenge run by Jen at That’s What I’m Talking About. Here’s the topic for this week. Libraries: do you prefer to visit in-person or check out on-line?
Julie:
Oh wow I can’t remember the last time I visited a library in person.
Since my preferred way to read is audiobook, followed by ebook, everything I need to do can be accomplished using the library app. I love that I don’t have to abide by hours of operation and can search, add to wishlist, request, any book at any time using the app. This is perfect when I already know what book I need because it’s a book club book for example.
But as a child I loved walking around the library picking out my next book. The amazing feeling of lazy shelf perusal and cover judging to pick the next random book cannot be ignored. My son gets to enjoy that now with the school library, and maybe we will do the same in person at a local library someday.
Lynn:
Oh. This is a good topic!
I also mainly use the library app to borrow ebooks and audiobooks. Real books are heavy!
But I’ve also been to the library recently. My local library is my polling place. (Don’t forget to vote!) I’ve also been to a fancy library near me when I arrived early to meet a friend for lunch and it was too scorching outside to wait there. It was super fancy. Giant media labs to borrow\use computers. An auditorium for events. A cool looking kids section. Even the bathrooms were nice! Way more fancy than my local library.
Libraries are more than just books these days. And I, for one, appreciate that.
What about you?

So many of my childhood memories are of library visits. Like Lynn, the library has always been a bit more than just books. For me, the library itself still holds sway over going solely online, but I can definitely appreciate the convenience of not having to leave your home and access at any hour!

Real books are heavy… *snicker*
That’s a great point that libraries are for so much more than books. Ours has art shows, crafts, movie time, etc.

I tried reading a real book recently, Jen. It was the worst! I had to use a pillow to hold up the book!
