For this discussion post, we joining the Tell Me Something Tuesday challenge run by Jen at That’s What I’m Talking About. Here’s the topic for this week. Do you download freebies? Read free preview chapters?
Julie:
If it’s free it’s for me! Well, not that bad lol. But I have no problem “buying” free books if the book interests me in some way. Like I might read it someday. I randomly sometimes pick from my freebies on my kindle as my next read. I still do have a type. Sometimes I even remember these timely enough to use on our Shelf Love square for our Chapter BookBingo!
As for preview chapters, not usually. I won’t remember much about the preview chapter by the time it’s time to read that book, if I ever do read it, so the preview is kinda a waste of time for me. I do listen to audiobook samples before deciding whether to get that audiobook though. But that’s mostly to make sure I like the voice and pacing of the narrator, not to get a preview of the story.
Lynn:
I used to fall for the free books. And fall hard. I downloaded all of them. It was free, why not! But honestly, I never got around to reading any of them. Now I mostly stick with downloading books I actually plan to read. Bonus if they are free. I will admit to recently downloading some free books I’ve already read (from the library) as they are books I think I’d actually re-read. In my spare time. <eye roll>
I don’t think I’ve ever read preview chapters. If I’m in, I’m in. I have, though, listened to preview narration for audiobooks. Sometimes, it’s best to check out the narration first. You never know if the narrator has some weird accent that makes listening a challenge!
What about you?

Lynn, I was the same way! I used to download ALL the things if they were free (or even cheap, which I obviously regret more heh). Now I am much better. Unless it sounds like a perfect fit, I do not need it. It kind of makes me sad because I read a couple all-time faves as a Kindle freebie, but alas. Too many books, too little time. As for chapter samples, no, almost never, unless I am *really* on the fence and want to see how a book is. Definitely not in advance though, I do not have time to start a book twice!

hah! Yes – definitely, Shannon. Too many books; too little time. I also don’t have time to start a book twice!
Great answers – I agree with you both on checking out narrators before a purchase, but I’ve even stopped doing that as much because I usually want to “read” the story anyhow. Thanks for participating!

Thanks, Jen. And yes – if I’ve decided to read the book, a narrator isn’t going to make or break my desision.
