We’re chatting about covers on Chapter Break. ‘Cause you know we all judge books by covers, whether we admit it or not. We judge the style, the color and font choices, and just the overall look. That might not keep us from reading the book, but we do still judge.
What is it about space themed brightly colored covers that intrigues me so? I love the pink and the constellations. I love the font choice, mostly. Love the title font and love the author font. Not loving the subtitle font though for “an alien burlesque romance”. That just seems to clash. Pick two fonts, not 3.
Looking past the background and font, I start to get lost. The image does not work for me. It’s not particularly well arted, and are those tentacles? A tail? How many arms does he have? When I think burlesque I think fashion and show jazz sparkle wowness. This girly in a burlesque outfit doesn’t do it for me. The creepy alien face monster she’s trying to climb isn’t working for me either. At all.
So while I glanced at it, attention grab was successful, I would put it back down and move on.
This cover! So many thoughts!
First – who knew Alien Burlesque was a thing? Whenever I search for Sci Fi books and I find alien erotica, I roll my eyes. If that’s your thing, then good for you. I prefer space battles to space romance in my Sci Fi!
I do like the space background, with the pink and black and stars. The font is also great. That twinkling star in the COSMIC is classic!
As for the characters – is that supposed to be an alien cowboy? The cowboy hat would suggest so. The four arms and tail are off-putting, to be sure. The woman surely looks like a burlesque character!
Overall, this book caught my eye. But I doubt I’d pick it up and read it.
What are your thoughts on this cover?
Totally agree with you that the colors are eye-catching, but once I look past that the cover isn’t terribly appealing to me.

Covers can really make or break a book. I blogged about Weird Covers on Classic books a few years ago and just ran into that blog this week. I laughed my way through my reread. Your example cover brings so many questions to mind. Am I supposed to think the gal is loving up on a sea-creature cowboy? Not sure this gives me an accurate impression of the book.
Let’s discuss ranking books
Hah! Loving up on the sea-creature cowboy is now stuck in my head, Anne!
