For this discussion post, we joining the Tell Me Something Tuesday challenge run by Jen at That’s What I’m Talking About. Here’s the topic for this week. Is it easier or harder to write a review for a book you loved??
Julie:
Bottom line up front: It is easier to gush about a book than be carefully positive when you really don’t care for it. If I liked a book quite a bit, it’s easy to say what I liked and why. If I’m not doing a review as part of a tour where you must be professional and careful, I can also bash a terrible book quite easily. It can be quite fun to say this book was terrible, and here’s why. Maybe a book I loved doesn’t feel like a thorough review because it will just be this aspect was great, these characters rocked, this was awesome. Overall, a review with pros and cons is a better review and more interesting to read.
Lynn:
Agreed 100% with Julie. It’s a lot easier to praise a book I love than to carefully criticize a book I kind of liked but need to write a review for. My biggest challenge for reviewing books I love is not spoiling it for everyone. I’m shouting from the rooftops about this book. But also don’t want to give out too many details!
What about you?

I don’t do negative reviews at all anymore, so I just basically get to gush about books I enjoy. It was a bit of an adjustment at first, but I’m happy with it now.

You phrased this perfectly: “Maybe a book I loved doesn’t feel like a thorough review because it will just be this aspect was great, these characters rocked, this was awesome.” That’s exactly it. I find it hard to give examples of what works and why I loved it, so it doesn’t feel like a good review.
I agree with you both. Sometimes I don’t feel like I can adequately put into words how much I love a book and that makes it harder. But in general, it can be much easier to sing the praises of a book I loved over trying to write a review about a book I don’t have strong feelings about one way or another.
