CARE AND FEEDING OF YOUR AUTHOR by Gin Griffith
Authors are strange and volatile creatures, but if handled properly, can make exceptional companions. Though every author is different, here are some basic guidelines for keeping them content.
- DO NOT DISTURB. This is very important. Loud noises and interruptions can agitate an author and result in aggressive behavior. A calm, quiet environment is of utmost importance. If you must disrupt your author, approach slowly and make yourself visible yet nonthreatening. A smile often works well. If possible, wait for the author to focus on you before attempting to speak. Keep interruptions as short and infrequent as possible. Exceptions include feeding and watering (see below).
- FEEDING AND WATERING. Hyperfixation is common among authors. Many forget to eat and drink, which can lead to irritability later. To prevent this, carefully place snacks and beverages in front of your author every few hours. Observe your author to see what they like best. Finger foods often work well, though be mindful that some can leave residue on an author’s keyboard or paper. If your author enjoys alcohol, a well-timed tipple can both calm the mind and boost creativity, earning you favor with the author later.
- ENVIRONMENTAL AMENITIES. Comfort is essential. Ensure your author is content with their surroundings, including their temperature, seating, writing implements, view, and any sounds in their environment. If noise is a concern, consider providing your author with comfortable noise-canceling headphones.
- AFTERCARE. When your author emerges from a writing or editing session, they may be groggy and disoriented. Remain calm and quiet. Ask them how their session went. Authors frequently suffer from crippling self-doubt and imposter syndrome. It is essential you provide consistent, enthusiastic support and positive encouragement. If your author enjoys petting, now is the time. A soothing beverage (alcoholic or otherwise) will undoubtedly be well received. Offer more snacks. After a few minutes, suggest an alternate activity to help reorient them to the real world.
Authors are fascinating and finicky beings, but with proper care and handling, they can make excellent partners and friends. Show your author that you understand their preferences and quirks, respect their space, and provide ongoing support, and you’ll be rewarded with a fun, imaginative companion—and perhaps even a character named after you.
