WOW! WOMEN ON WRITING TOUR
OF
Disrupted
Book Summary
The San Ramos High students are busy rehearsing their performance of Our Town when the school and the surrounding towns are rocked by a 7.1 earthquake. As a series of unusual aftershocks disrupt the town further, their school is deemed unsafe, and the show is postponed indefinitely unless they can find a way to turn that bad luck around. Dealing with their own personal difficulties and led by the stage manager, Sandee, who is working her way through the loss of her brother, they attempt to bring the community together, make the performance a success, and do their share to raise funds to rebuild. Both the show and life must go on!

What You Know: The Key to Authenticity
The experts say that you should write about what you know, and I agree. Disrupted is a unique blend of moments from my life mixed with situations and stakes that are the sole property of the characters in Disrupted.
For example, I remember racing to a door frame during the Loma Prieta Earthquake in the San Francisco Bay Area in 1989. So, it was the metal frame surrounding a sliding glass door. I wasn’t there long. I raced back into the room to rescue a lamp from my father’s apartment. Objects mattered back then—especially inherited objects, and the terror of what I could be losing stayed with me and turned up in Disrupted.
I remember showing up for the drama class at Walnut Creek Civic Arts I was supposed to teach at 7 pm and reading the sign on the door from the teacher of another class that said, “I was here. Where were you?” Well stated, I thought, and I hope her attitude as well as my caring showed up in the teacher, Ms. G, even though she was a minor character.
I’ve never lost a sibling, but I’ve lost drama students. I know the hole that never left, and I understand about wanting to please your parents at the same time you want your independence. All of those are traits of Sandee Mason. And even if I didn’t know firsthand, I’ve felt the emotions of characters who’ve lost relationships on TV and at my age I’ve empathized with the grief of families who’ve lost a loved one. The experiences are parallel—not identical—but they tap into real emotions that my characters can feel, resist, and express.
I’ve watched people stutter and stumble when it’s too hard to say what they feel. I could hear the discomfort and fear in their voices when a student or friend told me about a secret crush or a plan to get even with a troublemaker. I could see the glimmers of pride when someone figured out a solution to a problem that had been troubling her for weeks. They stayed in my memory and were recycled into Disrupted.
I’ve watched plenty of people keep a dark secret about their family and / or their personal circumstances, so it was easy to understand what motivated Pete to hang out at Starbucks, ask to use Sandee’s shower, ingratiate himself with her parents, and even find her a venue for the show when the school theatre is closed by the earthquake.
If you write, you can take any emotion you’ve felt or observed and give it to your character. Do it skillfully and it will be authentic. Writing allows you to blend truth and imagination and create stories that will engage, entertain, and enlighten readers.
