For this discussion post, we are joining the Tell Me Something Tuesday challenge run by Jen at That’s What I’m Talking About. Here’s the topic for this week. What new-to-you authors have you enjoyed in the past 12 months?

Julie Review Avatar Julie:

Most of the authors I read these days are new to me because they’re either a review book or a book club book. I don’t read enough of my own shelves of authors I chose to buy. But that’s one reason I am decreasing how many books I allow for review.

To answer this question, I’m going with 5 star reads. 5 star but not kids books that I reviewed, because they are a separate story and there are too many of them. For adult-size books that I have rated 5 stars, these are the authors that I have not read before, but have blown me away.

  • Rebecca Yarros – Fourth Wing. My first read by her, not my last. Currently reading Iron Flame
  • Gillian McAllister – Wrong Place Wrong Time. I haven’t read any of her books before but this one was so good!

LynnpicLynn:

Agreed completely with Julie. I do have more time to read, but also tacking a chance on a new author is a BIG chance. What if the book isn’t for me? When I know an existing author will be enjoyable. But also, if you don’t take a risk, how do you find new authors and characters to fawn over!

I’m in complete agreement with Rebecca Yarros. I’m LOVING Iron Flame. The I don’t want to put it down kind of loving!

I haven’t read any other 5 star books recently, but up in that same level are Sherry Thomas (Lady Sherlock) and Skyler Ramirez (Dumb Luck and Dead Heroes series). Both of these authors were unknown to me, but I took a chance and loved them both. I even started the second in the Dumb Luck series this week.

What about you?

  1. I haven’t read Fourth Wing yet, but of course I’ve been seeing it EVERYWHERE and am super curious about it. I’m glad you girls have enjoyed the books! Hopefully I can get to it in the next couple of months.

  2. I adore the Lady Sherlock series – they get better as the series progresses. I also LOVED Fourth Wing and considered adding it to my list; however, I didn’t LOVE Iron Flame, so I held off. I look forward to hearing what you guys think of Iron Flame!

  3. It’s always exciting to try new to me authors, but yes, it can definitely be a gamble.

I really like the Sherry Thomas’ Lady Sherlock series, too.
