For this discussion post, we are joining the Tell Me Something Tuesday challenge run by Jen at That’s What I’m Talking About. Here’s the topic for this week. Worst character jobs: what are they and who has them?
Julie:
Thinking about some of the books I’ve read recently, one comes to mind that really affected the lives of the characters. Spoiler warning. In Wrong Place, Wrong Time, Ryan’s job as an undercover police officer really sets the whole story up for all the lies and secrets.
Let’s list another. In A Witch’s Guide to Fake Dating a Demon, the main Demon character is a soul collector, with an accidental soul of his own. What a terrible job to have to trick humans into giving up their souls, when his new soul gives this demon a moral compass.
Lynn:
I’m finding it difficult to recall character jobs right off the top of my head. Which leads me to believe those jobs are not crucial to plot development. Sure there are the usual soldiers, spies, scientists, professors, and students. But also a lot of vague job descriptions that I’d probably not want to apply for.
Standing out from my recent reads – a paleontologist, in The Paleontologist. But this time around, the museum is haunted by the deaths of the animals in the exhibits. Which is way less fun times than I’d want in a trip to the museum.
Thinking about Mendoza and Lin in the Dumb Luck and Dead Heroes series, they start out as navel officers, but then end up in space navy witness protection trying to figure out how to actually make a living. Turns out spaceships are expensive to maintain without the backing of the navy!
What about you?

Julie: What a tough job to keep with a moral compass steering you. Sounds interesting.
Lynn: I agree… I don’t want to be Kate Daniels, for example, fighting monsters and an evil father, or a soldier at war.
