Author Interview

At what point did you decide to be an author and what was your path to publication?

I’ve always known I was going to be a storyteller! Before I physically learned to write, I would tell my mom stories, and she would record them for me. I went to Chapman’s film school and earned a B.A. in Screenwriting. My professors loved my characters and stories, but I’d often receive the feedback, “This reads like a novel!” That’s when I knew my heart lay in book writing. I completed my first book during college, queried dozens of publishers, and had it picked up by a small press. And, as they say, the rest is history.

Now, I voluntarily publish as an indie author; I love the creative control, and you can’t beat those 70% royalties!

What do you do when a new idea jumps out at you while you’re still working on a book?

Oh, boy! Those ideas go into the eternally growing “premise pile.” Then, about once a month, I organize my Release Plan—which is essential my tentative schedule for what I’m going to write and release over the next 5 years. Oftentimes, these ideas make it there! For example, my next series will be “Gothic Retellings,” which I’ll kick off with a Phantom of the Opera retelling. I’m so excited about this one!

Tell us what you enjoy most about your writing in your genre.

I love history and learning new things; I also love writing highly atmospheric pieces with a slight Gothic edge.

But mostly, I write to inspire emotion—and the romance genre lends itself well to that. I’m also writing a horror novella, which I hope to release next year. Like with romance, horror plays strongly on our deepest emotions—so it makes sense that I’m drawn to that genre.

Do you identify with your main character, or did you create a character that is your opposite?

Blanchette in Red Kingdom is a character I identify with—she’s impulsive, loyal, caring, and willing to do what’s right, even when it’s difficult. I think she embodies my exaggerated qualities… because, if I’m being totally honest, I’m not so sure I could survive what she goes through! (Sorry, Blanchette!)

Describe the book/series in 10 words or less for people who are just learning about it.

Your favorite fairy tales retold with a dark, realistic twist.

Don’t miss them! Beauty of the Beast and Red Kingdom are now on Kindle Unlimited for the very first time!

To date, what is your favorite (or most difficult) chapter you have ever written?

The sex scenes are always a challenge! Don’t get me wrong—I LOVE writing them—but I always feel a lot of pressure to… perform, haha? Readers have high expectations for these moments (for a good reason), especially when they’re reading a slow burn, which I tend to write.

What is your take on book boyfriends? Do they actually exist? Or do they set the bar for “real life men” impossibly high?

Heck yes, they exist! Okay, maybe stay away from real-life stalkers… but beautiful ladies, never settle! Find your real-life book boyfriend. Someone who makes you laugh, who supports your passions, who’s your biggest fan, and, most importantly, who is willing to put in the work, day after day.

I know I’ve found mine! P.S. Talon largely inspired Rowan’s character in Red Kingdom. Can you see the resemblance? 😊

Have you ever experienced writer’s block? How did you deal with it?

Honestly, almost every day! Staying disciplined helps a lot (aka, completing a word count every day, rain or shine, and not depending on inspiration), as well as having a writing ritual. Mine is the following:

  1. Light candles and spray the room
  2. Play inspiring music that complements the mood I’m trying to convey in the scene
  3. Watch or read something inspiring (i.e., a Game of Thrones scene)
  4. “Beat out” or outline the scene
  5. Set a timer for 20 minutes
  6. Don’t do anything else but write until that timer sounds!

About the Author

I live in Sunny California with my dashing husband, who inspires my romance novels every day!

Writing has always been an integral part of my identity. Before I physically learned how to write, I’d narrate stories to my mom, and she’d record them for me.

I graduated from Chapman’s film school, where I often received the feedback on my scripts, “Your stories and characters are great, but this reads like a novel!” That’s when I realized my true calling.

In my free time, I frequent reptile expos, lift double my body’s weight, and indulge in dinosaur trivia.

I’m passionate about writing stories that explore what it means to be human and to be loved. My books focus on hope, courage, and redemption in the face of adversity.
