All Money Ain’t Good Money: A Jinx Curry Mystery
Book Summary
Jinx Curry is a single mom who spends her days spying on cheating wives and husbands, but she aches for more importance. When her boss, Capricorn Hayes, finally assigns Jinx a missing persons case involving a congressman’s missing granddaughter, Jinx jumps at the chance. Not only to solve it, but to earn the fifty-thousand-dollar bonus that would pay her bills, and get a menacing creditor off her back.
But the investigation proves more dangerous and costly than Jinx believes. After an unknown individual in a black Corvette nearly runs Jinx down and begins stalking her, Jinx has to sacrifice her relationship with her daughter by sending Arielle to live with her father. Can Jinx find the congressman’s granddaughter while surviving her stalker? Or will this job be her last?

Guest Post: Why Readers Like a Flawed Protagonist
If you write a character with perfect features, a body to die for (okay, that works most times), but a
perfect face, perfect teeth, no bad habits—you get the drift, your readers will snooze. Or worse, slip
into full REM. I know I would because perfect characters bore me. And they will bore your readers.
So, what do you do? Make your characters imperfect – just like your readers.
First, inject lots of endearing faults. Take best-selling-author Sara Paretsky’s private investigator, V I
Warshawski. The hardboiled, mystery protagonist displays a hard-to-control temper that gets her into
hot water. Take Janet Evanovich’s private sleuth, Stephanie Plum. She vacillates between sex with her
boss, and her police detective boyfriend. Being childless prevents her from springing for a babysitter and
explaining her active sex life to disapproving parents. But a healthy sex life partnered with a fulfilling
career is on full display. Now that’s interesting! And the novel’s pages turn.
You can also inject your characters with endearing habits. Take best-selling author James Patterson’s
character, Alex Cross. To unwind, the crime fighter plays the piano. What about the movie Dirty
Harry? Okay, it’s a movie. But Clint Eastwood’s character always frequented this café and ordered
black coffee. While engrossed in reading his newspaper, Harry hadn’t noticed the waitress
sandbagging his coffee with sugar. He pays the waitress, leaves, and while walking to his car, he takes
a drink of the god-awful-tasting coffee. He gags and spits it out. He looks back at the diner just as he
sees someone turn over the ‘Closed’ sign. Instantly, he knows something is amiss. He enters the
diner from the back entrance and walks in on a robbery in progress. He tells the armed robbers that
the waitress has been serving his coffee the same way for a certain number of years, and she picked
this day to saturate his coffee with sugar. So, he knew something was wrong. Dirty Harry vanquishes
the bad guys.
I’d say Dirty Harry and those three authors’ characters are endearing enough. Endearing is key because
you’ll want your readers to care about your protagonist from the moment the book is opened. Even
after the book is closed, you’ll want your reader glad or grateful that your protagonist lives to see
another day and perhaps to be resurrected in a sequel.
