Author Interview:
Which is the hardest character to write and which is the easiest?
There really isn’t a degree of difficulty when it comes to writing characters. I try to make them as real as possible before writing about them. I give them a name, a favorite color, a pastime etc. I envision who this person is on paper.
Where do you get inspiration for your stories?
I enjoy having the ability to creatively write. I love the art of storytelling. It is always a challenge write in hope that the audience truly understands my message and the underlying message.
There are many books out there about children. What makes yours different?
My book is different because I rely on the imagination that I used at the age of five years old. I write freely, I am in a relaxed state. I also use the rollicking rhyme technique to give my writing style a little more flare and to hopefully keep the audience interested. Note: I almost always put a hidden message or deeper meaning within my writings that only certain readers will fully catch and understand.
What advice would you give to budding writers?
To me, the key to writing is writing. While you are writing try to get as many of your ideals on paper as possible. Don’t worry about spelling, grammar, or punctuation. These aspects of writing can be corrected later. Write when you feel like writing. Quality writing is something that you cannot force. It has to flow freely from you to be freely received by others.
Relax, have fun and enjoy the art of writing. Put as much down on paper as you possibly can because it is far easier to trim things down then to try to add to your writing once it’s completed.
Do you ever get writer’s block? What helps you overcome it?
Writer’s block is just a part of the writing experience. I only write when I’m inspired and feel the flow of writing. When I get writer’s block I simply stop. Sometimes for a couple hours a couple days or even a week if needed until I feel that the inspiration of writing returns.
What is a favorite compliment you received on your writing?
One reader expressed how he broke out in tears and cried when his sons read a portion of my book where I wrote about him. I try to write from my heart, and it is incredible when my writings touch someone’s heart.
In today’s text savvy world most writers use a computer or laptop. Have you ever written parts of your book on paper?
I am old-fashioned. I write all my books on the 8 x 11 paper tablet, accompanied by a blue ink pen. Once I am finished with my project, I type the book on my computer or iPad.
