Julie’s Review:

Celebrating Mid-Autumn Festival is a book about an important holiday in Chinese culture, thanking the moon for the autumn harvest. The book shares history as well as legends behind the festival. It even contains recipes for making the mooncakes as well as other crafts and games.

I liked how the book starts with a table of contents that is in picture, not just a list of topics. The thumbnail picture in the table of contents is the preview for the illustration with that chapter. I use chapter lightly, as it is a short children’s book (each chapter is a page or two).

I enjoyed the lovely drawings with this book. The cover ias vivid colors with a glowing paper lantern held by adorable bunnies, some snacks (the mooncakes) and tea, and a goddess flying over the moon in the sky full of stars. Each of these symbols depicts a legend that is part of the festival.

It’s a cute little non-fiction read to teach kids about a fun festival from another culture. It can be used in the classroom to make the crafts and play the games and would make a great homeschool preschool activity baking together.
