What is your current genre of choice? Has it changed recently?
Julie:
If I’m being honest my genre of choice has always been and continues to be something in the realm of fantasy. I know that’s a huge genre, and there are some aspects of fantasy I don’t care for. I prefer fast-paced Urban Fantasy as they are also quick reads. I don’t love the 800 page epic fantasies. I enjoy a magical realism. I enjoy fantasy YA. I like romantasy, but again, not hugely thick (pun intended) books. I read to escape real life, to enjoy a story in my mind. Reading and hallucinating wildly. I want to be entertained, and have something to say about the book. Fantasy seems to offer a lot of that.
Lynn:
My default genre tends to be sci-fi. But I also struggle with finding sci-fi books that I want to read. I want funny and action-y with a side of pew-pew space battles. Not depressing future dystopia. I want Star Trek utopia. And Jay Kristoff’s\Amie Kaufman’s sci fi books have ruined a lot of sci fi for me. I liked The Expanse books that I read, but they delved into terrorism as a plot point and I have zero interest in that. Also – side note: my idea of space pirates is more Firefly and less capturing earth women to be sex slaves. The challenge to find a perfect sci-fi book is real, people!
What about you?

Hi! At the moment, I tend to lean towards low/high fantasy when I’m searching for new books. I like to get lost in a world completely unrecognisable from our own. I also like epic but I have to be in the right state of mind to commit to something like that! I like some romantasy but they tend to not have enough fantasy in to keep my hooked, though I don’t mind as much because if I’m not reading fantasy then I will go for a romance.
I actually don’t think I’ve read any urban fantasy so I will look for some of your recommendations!
I think fantasy is my current genre of choice. I need something escapist right now, and fantasy is working for me.

Totally feel you on needing escapism
Romance is my preferred mostly. I used to be mostly horror and sci-fi. And I do still enjoy those occasionally, along with some fantasy. But with my life not always what I like, the happy endings I get with romance, especially rom-coms making me laugh, that’s what I gravitate to.
